The Lord is King! Tell the earth to celebrate and all islands to shout. ~ Psalm 97:1 (CEV)
And they were singing the song that his servant Moses and the Lamb had sung. They were singing,
“Lord God All-Powerful,
you have done great
and marvelous things.
You are the ruler
of all nations,
and you do what is
right and fair.
Lord, who doesn’t honor
and praise your name?
You alone are holy,
and all nations will come
and worship you...”
~ Revelation 15:3-4a (CEV)
KEY IDEA:
No matter where you live, celebrate the Lord as king.
PRAYER:
Lord, I join in celebrating your royal authority. I confess that I get frustrated by all the power-hungry people in the world. I get too wrapped up and angry about them when in fact you are the true king. Help me to trust that you are working out all the power and control issues. I recognize that I don't see all that you are doing but I'm going to trust you anyway and celebrate Jesus as king. Amen.
The people you rescued
were led by your powerful love
to your holy place. ~ Exodus 15:13a (CEV)
Let love be your guide. Christ loved us and offered his life for us as a sacrifice that pleases God. ~ Ephesians 5:2a (CEV)
KEY IDEA:
If we're going to serve God in any way we need to let his love move and direct us.
PRAYER:
Lord God, your love is the greatest force in existence. Thank you for overcoming all that is unloveable about us. Your love does that. I stand in awe of how Christ demonstrates your love for us -- for me. Yet, strangely, I continue to let fear influence how I live. Please cut me open and remove the fear. Replace it with your love so that it is leading my life. I'm going to live a very different kind of life because your love is driving me. Amen.
THE 14th SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
God’s paths get you where you want to go.
Right-living people walk them easily;
wrong-living people are always tripping and stumbling. ~ Hosea 14:9b (MSG)
Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. ~ Hebrews 10:24 (NLT)
KEY IDEA:
We need to help each other stay on the right path.
PRAYER:
Great God -- pioneering God, you have cut a good path for us upon which you want us to walk. Thank you for the gift of that path. But I am careless about staying on the trail. I'm inclined to think that the signs are meant for others and that it won't do any harm if I wander off -- only a little. Help me to take your pathway seriously -- and to look out for other wanderers who might be setting themselves up to trip and fall. Perhaps by helping others stay on course I'll be doing the same for myself. Amen.
I am aware of my wrongdoing, and I my sin continues to haunt me. ~ Psalm 51:3 (ABP)
If we own up to our sins and admit them, God will certainly forgive us of them. And on top of that, he will scrub the wrong from our lives. That's because God is totally faithful; it's who he is. ~ 1 John 1:9 (ABP)
KEY IDEA:
God is faithful and forgiving.
PRAYER:
Thank you, God! You know how bad I am -- how there are things that I think, say, and do -- things that I fail to do -- which are downright sinful. Yet, you are so faithful and so forgiving that I'm stunned. Help me to get past my sin and to dwell more on your faithfulness and forgiveness. Help me to clean up my act so that sin has no place in my life. I know that I can't do that on my own. I'm so glad, though, that I can count on you. Jesus proves that fact. Amen.
*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS
The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul. The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
