SECURE PRESENCE

PROVERBS 18:10 (CEV)
The Lord is a mighty tower
where his people can run
for safety...

PHILIPPIANS 4:6 (ABP)
Stop all the fussing and worrying. Replace all that with prayer -- making requests, praising God, and offering thanks. Give it all to God!

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Turn to God during the hard times.

PRAYER
Gracious God, I'm thankful that you are available to us even in the hard times. My own lame solutions for safety are never enduring. Draw me into your secure presence. I'm going to be safe with you. Amen.

GOOD GRACE

DEUTERONOMY 5:29 (NLT)
Oh, that they would always have hearts like this, that they might fear me and obey all my commands! If they did, they and their descendants would prosper forever.

HEBREWS 13:9 (CEB)
It’s a good thing for the heart to be strengthened by grace...

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Accept no substitutes; find the strength you need to live well in God's grace.

PRAYER
God, life is a gift from you. And the new life that comes through my connection to Christ is the greatest gift I have experienced. But why is it that I'm so easily suckered into thinking how my life would be so much better if I only had more money or more status or more ___________? Help me to seek strength from you alone. I'm going to rely on your grace to make my life good. Amen.

COMPASSIONATE

The 2nd Sunday in Christmastide

ISAIAH 58:10 (MSG)
If you are generous with the hungry
and start giving yourselves to the down-and-out,
Your lives will begin to glow in the darkness,
your shadowed lives will be bathed in sunlight.

LUKE 6:36 (CEB)
Be compassionate just as your Father is compassionate.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
You'll shine when your life reflects the compassion of God.

PRAYER
Kind and merciful God, thank you for the grace extended to us through Christ Jesus. Thank you for taking care of us each day -- for the food, the place, the fellowship. I confess that I easily get so wrapped up in maintaining my little world that I don't really see those around me who are in need. Open my eyes to the hungry and the down-and-out. Give me a heart filled with compassion and the practical wisdom needed to apply that compassion. I'm not going to focus on what is out of my control but on what I can do in your name. Amen.

LEARN AND TEACH

NEHEMIAH 8:8 (NLT)
They read from the Book of the Law of God and clearly explained the meaning of what was being read, helping the people understand each passage.

ACTS 28:30-31 (NLT)

For the next two years, Paul lived in Rome at his own expense. He welcomed all who visited him, boldly proclaiming the Kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ. And no one tried to stop him.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
It's important to get a solid handle on God's Word.

PRAYER
Thank you, dear God, that your word is both law and gospel, commandment and gift. Thank you for all who help me to understand this. Instill in me a learner's curiosity eager to study scripture and learn to pray. Help me mature in you and grow in your loving-kindness. Give me opportunities to teach others as I learn. Amen. *ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
