SPEAKING

ISAIAH 55:11 (MSG)
So will the words that come out of my mouth
not come back empty-handed.
They’ll do the work I sent them to do,
they’ll complete the assignment I gave them.

ACTS 4:29-30 (CEV)
We are your servants. So make us brave enough to speak your message. Show your mighty power, as we heal people and work miracles and wonders in the name of your holy Servant Jesus.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God empowers us to speak his word -- and his words are effective.

PRAYER
Great God, I'm honored that you have given me such an important assignment. Forgive me when I allow circumstances to erode my boldness and I don't faithfully share your message. Make us brave enough to speak your message. I'm living in anticipation of what will come from your word. Amen.

TRUST GOD

GENESIS 18:14 (CEB)
Is anything too difficult for the LORD?

LUKE 17:5 (MSG)
The apostles came up and said to the Master, “Give us more faith.”

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Trust that God is working out the solution because nothing is too hard for him.

PRAYER
Powerful God, I'm grateful that you are in charge. Often, I try to be in charge but it never seems to work out right. Increase my faith so that I'm fully trusting you -- your plan, your wisdom, your power, your love, and your faithfulness. I'm going to relax. Amen.

EAGER GENEROSITY

The Fourth Sunday after Epiphany

1 CHRONICLES 29:9 (CEV)
David and the people were very happy that so much had been given to the LORD, and they all celebrated.

2 CORINTHIANS 9:7 (MSG)
I want each of you to take plenty of time to think it over, and make up your own mind what you will give. That will protect you against sob stories and arm-twisting. God loves it when the giver delights in the giving.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God loves it when his people are eager in their generosity.

PRAYER

Gracious God, I'm energized when I see how generous you are. I wish that my own generosity was so energizing. I'm too often motivated by shame or outside pressure. Give me clarity of mind so that I can think clearly about the needs around me and respond with eager generosity. I'm going to follow your lead. Amen.

CREATION

PSALM 145:10 (CEV)
All creation will thank you,
and your loyal people
will praise you.

HEBREWS 6:7 (CEB)
The ground receives a blessing from God when it drinks up the rain that regularly comes and falls on it and yields a useful crop for those people for whom it is being farmed.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God blesses us through his creation.

PRAYER
Creator God, thank you for the rain, the soil, the plants, and the beauty of the creation which surrounds us. We are truly blessed through what you have made. But our sins against your creation are many. We are casual or even indifferent toward the air, the soil, and the water. Direct us into thoughtful regenerative actions so that the generations to come can enjoy the full measure of your creation. Amen.

DAILYTEXTS.ORG

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
