FAITHFUL LEADERSHIP

The Fourth Sunday in Eastertide

PSALM 48:14 (CEB)
“This is God,
     our God, forever and always!
He is the one who will lead us
     even to the very end.”

PHILIPPIANS 1:6 (MSG)
There has never been the slightest doubt in my mind that the God who started this great work in you would keep at it and bring it to a flourishing finish on the very day Christ Jesus appears.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God has a long-term commitment to lead us to the end of our journey.

PRAYER

God, you are the one who has gotten me up and moving. You've given me a new life through Christ Jesus. Forgive me for doubting that you're still with me -- that my circumstances are so overwhelming that I'm going to be derailed. Give me an encouraging word so that I can persevere and stand in glory on the day when Christ once again appears among us. Amen.

SIGHT

ISAIAH 42:6-7 (MSG)
I am GOD. I have called you... To make a start at bringing people into the open, into light: opening blind eyes, releasing prisoners from dungeons, emptying the dark prisons.

MARK 10:49 (CEB)
Jesus stopped and said, “Call him forward.”

They called the blind man, “Be encouraged! Get up! He’s calling you.”

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Jesus calls us out of the darkness.

PRAYER
Lord of the Light, sight is such a glorious gift -- whether it is physical sight, spiritual sight, or intellectual insight. You are Lord over it all. Forgive my indifference toward those who are blind. It shows that I'm still at least partially blind myself and in need of your full healing. I'm going to get up and moving, trusting that you will lead me with your light. Amen.

FORTITUDE

ISAIAH 7:4 (CEB)
Be careful and stay calm. Don’t fear, and don’t lose heart...

1 CORINTHIANS 16:13 (CEB)
Stay awake, stand firm in your faith, be brave, be strong.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Let your faith generate fortitude in your life.

PRAYER
God, you are a calming presence in the midst of a world filled with nerve-wracking static and chaos. I become anxious when overwhelmed. Open my eyes and ears to your presence so that I can stand firm in the midst of it all. I'm going to trust you to work through the craziness to my benefit. I pray in the name of Jesus my example of fortitude. Amen.

SHINE!

PSALM 34:5 (CEV)
Keep your eyes on the LORD!
You will shine like the sun
and never blush with shame.

ROMANS 12:12 (CEV)
Let your hope make you glad. Be patient in time of trouble and never stop praying.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Let your view of the Lord guide you through the rough times.

PRAYER
Lord God, you are the light of our lives -- not just when things are going right. You seem to shine the brightest during the darkest of times. I know that I'm prone to misstep and fall during dark times. I get anxious and do things that I eventually realize are not wise. Help me to fix my eyes on you rather than the dark around me. Because of you, I'm going to shine. Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
