ADVOCATE

EXODUS 32:11-12 (CEB)
But Moses pleaded with the LORD his God... "Calm down your fierce anger. Change your mind about doing terrible things to your own people."

1 JOHN 2:1 (CEB)
If you do sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous one.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
We are not without an advocate.

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for listening -- and not only that, you provide advocates to speak on our behalf. We're so messed up that we can't even make a case for ourselves. But you take care of that because you love us. Help me to give up my worry -- along with my sinful ways. I'm going to trust you. Amen.

GOD'S PATIENCE

HOSEA 11:3 (NLT)
I myself taught Israel how to walk,
leading him along by the hand.
But he doesn’t know or even care
that it was I who took care of him.

2 PETER 3:15 (MSG)
Interpret our Master’s patient restraint for what it is: salvation.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God is patient in his dealings with us -- much to our benefit.

PRAYER
Kind God, thank you for the patient way that you lead us. Help me to catch some of that patience from you because I get stressed out when problems aren't solved in a hurry. Help me to eliminate the sense of hurry from my life. I'm going to bask in your patience and how much it benefits me. Amen.

GOD'S PERSISTENCE

ISAIAH 41:9 (NLT)
You are my servant. For I have chosen you
and will not throw you away.

ROMANS 11:1 (CEB)
So I ask you, has God rejected his people? Absolutely not!

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God persistently loves his people -- even when they are wayward.

PRAYER
God, our refuge, thank you for choosing me to be your servant. Hide me in the shadow of your safety. I regret the way I can wiggle out of your hands, rebellious, and discouraged. Forgive me and corral me with your gentle way into claiming my place as chosen in your kingdom. Amen. (Daily Texts, Ground Up Grace edition)

LIGHT

ZECHARIAH 14:7 (MSG)
What a Day that will be! No more cold nights—in fact, no more nights! The Day is coming—the timing is GOD’s—when it will be continuous day. Every evening will be a fresh morning.

1 JOHN 1:5 (MSG)
This, in essence, is the message we heard from Christ and are passing on to you: God is light, pure light; there’s not a trace of darkness in him.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Let God's light define your day.

PRAYER
Lord of light, you sent Christ into the world to reveal what light looks like and what it does. I confess that even though I'm drawn to his light I still worry about all the darkness in the world. There is a lot of pain and there are lots of evil people. Help me to step back, take a deep breath, and assess the situation so that I can once again see how light conquers death. Resurrection gets the final word in a world defined by light. Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
