ASK!

PSALM 65:5 (CEV)
Our God, you save us,
and your fearsome deeds answer
     our prayers for justice!

JOHN 14:14 (ABP)
When you ask me for anything that is consistent with who I am, it is yours!

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Ask God!

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for listening. Forgive me for getting frustrated when you don't answer as quickly as I want or in the way that I expect. I recognize that my prayers are not always aligned with your will. So I am praying that you will again intervene in our world to pour out your justice and righteousness. In faith, I'm waiting to see how you work things out. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name; your Kingdom come; your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

TRUTH-TELLING

Trinity Sunday

EXODUS 23:2 (ABP)
Don't get caught up with the crowd when they're in the wrong.

EPHESIANS 4:15 (MSG)
God wants us to grow up, to know the whole truth and tell it in love—like Christ in everything. We take our lead from Christ, who is the source of everything we do.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Consistent truth-telling reflects the life of Christ in us.

PRAYER
God, your word is trustworthy and reliable. While I'd like to think that my word is the same, I confess that I fudge things a little bit -- but for positive outcomes. Rewire my brain and my mouth for complete accuracy. I'm not going to get caught up in passing along fake news just because I like the sound of it better than reality. Because Christ lives in me I'm going to make truth a priority.

Amen.

VIOLENCE

ISAIAH 2:2,4 (ABP)
In the future, GOD will settle all the disputes between nations and neighbors... All warring and violence will only be history.

LUKE 3:14 (CEV)
Some soldiers asked him, “And what about us? What do we have to do?”
John told them, “Don't force people to pay money to make you leave them alone. Be satisfied with your pay.”

SUMMARY SENTENCE
When we're following Jesus all forms of violence are a part of our past.

PRAYER
God of peace! During these challenging times, we're quick to come up with solutions for all the violence around us -- although we admit that they're all about what we think others should or shouldn't do. Indeed, even those who think of themselves as peaceful can spew violent and hurtful words. Help me to embrace your way of peace. Transform my thoughts, words, and actions in that direction. I'm going to leave every thought of violence in the past -- even the fantasies of revenge.

Amen.

ANGER

PROVERBS 15:1 (NLT)
A gentle answer deflects anger,
but harsh words make tempers flare.

EPHESIANS 4:26-27 (NLT)
Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
If you rent out space in your head to anger you're making more problems for yourself.

PRAYER
God, there are so many things about my life that could make you angry. Yet, you graciously respond to my nonsense with mercy, kindness, and love. You're the expert in defusing anger. Please teach me so that I can deal with the nonsense of others in a healthy way. I want to handle these situations in the Jesus way.

Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
