WITNESSES TO THE TRUTH

JOSHUA 24:24 (MSG)
The people answered Joshua, “We will worship GOD. What he says, we’ll do.”

JOHN 18:37 (MSG)
Jesus, speaking to Pilate: I was born and entered the world so that I could witness to the truth. Everyone who cares for truth, who has any feeling for the truth, recognizes my voice.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Those who say they love God and his truth will listen for and heed his voice.

PRAYER
Lord Jesus, you came to speak truth into a world where lies and half-truths seem to dominate. Even I find it easier at times to align myself with the lies. It is a matter of survival. Yet, I struggle because I feel drawn to you and how authentic you are. Enable me to really hear what you are saying and to make the core changes that need to happen so that I'm a credible witness to your truth. What you say -- I'll do. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name; your Kingdom come; your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

WHAT'S COMING

PROVERBS 4:18 (MSG)
The ways of right-living people glow with light;
the longer they live, the brighter they shine.

1 JOHN 3:2 (MSG)
But friends, that’s exactly who we are: children of God. And that’s only the beginning. Who knows how we’ll end up! What we know is that when Christ is openly revealed, we’ll see him—and in seeing him, become like him.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
When it comes to living for Christ the best is yet to come.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, through Christ you have welcomed us into your family. I don't yet fully grasp all that it means to be so closely aligned with him and your family. I trip up a good deal of the time. Help me to trust in your mercy and to more fully align my life with yours. I don't know exactly what's ahead but knowing you I'm sure that it is good. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

AFFECTIONS

JONAH 2:8 (ABP)
All those who devote themselves to honoring worthless things are turning their backs on God and his mercy.

1 JOHN 2:17 (NLT)
And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Pursue only meaningful things and relationships.

PRAYER
Unchanging God, I admit that there are material things I hang on to, even though I know they will perish. I am thankful that you continuously forgive my sinful actions. You are patient with me when my thoughts drift from you into worthless promises. Help me to seek and to do your will in all aspects of my life. Amen. (Daily Texts, Ground Up Grace edition)

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. THANKFUL

PSALM 136:3-4 (MSG)
Thank God! He deserves your thanks... Thank the miracle-working God. His love never quits.

LUKE 17:15-16 (ABP)
One of the healed men, upon realizing what had happened, returned to Jesus shouting praises to God. He dropped to the ground in front of him and thanked Jesus profusely for what he had done. The irony is that this one grateful man was a Samaritan -- a despised religious and social outcast -- the one least expected to respond.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Don't neglect to thank God.

PRAYER
God, your love never quits. Your miracles never stop. Forgive me for getting so caught up in the drama of life that I regularly neglect to express my gratitude. Foster within me a thankful heart so that my first response is to return to you with words of praise. Even if no one else thinks it important I want to be the thankful one.

Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
