GOD LISTENS

The 13th Sunday after Pentecost

PSALM 22:19 (CEV)
Don't stay far away, LORD!
My strength comes from you,
so hurry and help.

1 JOHN 5:15 (CEV)

We know God listens when we pray...

SUMMARY SENTENCE
We know God is present and listening.

PRAYER
God, some of my frustration in life comes from the fact that people don't listen to me enough. I mean, really listen. Thank you for being around to listen to me -- even when I don't make a lot of sense. Help me to recognize that this is enough to press forward in life without frustration. I'm looking forward to our future conversations. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

GOD THE MYSTERY

DEUTERONOMY 29:29 (CEV)
The LORD our God hasn't explained the present or the future, but he has commanded us to obey the laws he gave to us and our descendants.

JOHN 17:26 (CEV)
I told them what you are like, and I will tell them even more. Then the love you have for me will become part of them, and I will be one with them.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Through Christ, we become one with God in thoughts and actions.

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for the way that through Christ you've given us a powerful glimpse of who you are and how we can intimately relate to you. Yet, we are afraid of the unknown. The mysterious aspects of you scare us and we end up trying to over-explain things about which we know little. Show me how to approach you with humbleness and less dogmatism. I'm going to allow your love to flow through me -- even if I can't explain it all.

Amen.

CREATOR GOD

PSALM 67:7 (ABP)
Indeed, God will continue to favor us,
and people all over the world will honor him.

REVELATION 4:11 (CEV)
Our Lord and God,
   you are worthy
      to receive glory,
      honor, and power.
You created all things,
and by your decision they are
   and were created.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Honor God the Creator.

PRAYER
Our Lord and God, you are the creative source behind all that exists. You are worthy of all recognition and honor. You are the only one qualified to handle ultimate power. Yet, we like to pretend that everything revolves around us and our self-centered agendas. Re-establish your place in my life and in the life of your creation. We desire to be a part of your creation renewal project. Start with me. I'm going to say that you are worthy!

Amen.

GOD PRESENT

LAMENTATIONS 3:57 (MSG)
You came close when I called out.
You said, "It’s going to be all right."

JOHN 16:24 (MSG)
Ask in my name, according to my will, and he’ll most certainly give it to you. Your joy will be a river overflowing its banks!

SUMMARY SENTENCE

God pulls in extra close to take care of what we need when we call out to him.

PRAYER
God, you are always present with us. Your Holy Spirit lives in us. Yet when I hit a rough patch my mind and heart play tricks on me and I begin to respond as though I'm alone. Intervene and set me straight. Provide what I need to carry on as your friend and agent. I'm going to trust that you're working things out.

Amen.

DAILYTEXTS.ORG

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
