AT HOME

ISAIAH 32:18 (CEB)
Then my people will live in a peaceful dwelling,
in secure homes, in carefree resting places.

EPHESIANS 2:19-20 (MSG)
That’s plain enough, isn’t it? You’re no longer wandering exiles. This kingdom of faith is now your home country. You’re no longer strangers or outsiders. You belong here, with as much right to the name Christian as anyone. God is building a home. He’s using us all—irrespective of how we got here—in what he is building. He used the apostles and prophets for the foundation. Now he’s using you, fitting you in brick by brick, stone by stone, with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone that holds all the parts together.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Through Christ, the promise of a settled future with a true home begins now.

PRAYER
How good it is, Lord, to be at home in your merciful love! There are times when I find myself in strange places, far from your presence. Thank you for always seeking me out. Forgive my wandering ways. Keep me content to live in your kingdom of grace, safely built up on the cornerstone of Christ. Amen. (Daily Texts, Ground Up Grace edition)

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

A NEW WAY

PROVERBS 12:18 (CEV)
Sharp words cut like a sword,
but words of wisdom heal.

ROMANS 14:19 (CEB)
So let’s strive for the things that bring peace and the things that build each other up.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Through all our words and actions we are aiming to build others up rather than cut them down.

PRAYER
Dear God, you sent your Son into the world to be the Great Physician as he launched a new kingdom where healing and peace are the law of the land. We thank you. At the same time we acknowledge that we still participate in some of the old and unhealthy ways which involve cutting people down to size or trying to position ourselves so that we appear to be superior. Refresh in us your vision for a different kind of world -- a world where even the least deserving are treated with respect and honor. We commit ourselves to live accordingly -- even as we await the return of Christ and the day of the Lord. Amen.

Amen.

GOD IS THERE WHEN WE NEED HIM

PSALM 81:7 (MSG)
You called to me in your pain;
I got you out of a bad place.

2 TIMOTHY 4:17 (ABP)
The Lord stood beside me and shared some of his strength with me.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God is there for us when we need him.

PRAYER
God, I remember all the times when I've been in a bad way -- when I've been barely able to cry out to you -- and then I suddenly saw that you were there. Forgive my shortsightedness -- that I don't look so hard for you until those moments of despair. But thank you for being with me anyway. Call me out when I use the pain and despair of life as an excuse for not taking new and bold steps. I'm going to trust that you'll be there when I need you because you are both faithful and capable. Amen.

Amen.

ENERGIZED

PSALM 118:14 (ABP)
GOD empowers me to face my enemies. He protects me and saves me from the opposition.

ROMANS 15:13 (MSG)
Oh! May the God of green hope fill you up with joy, fill you up with peace, so that your believing lives, filled with the life-giving energy of the Holy Spirit, will brim over with hope!

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God gives us the energy needed to faithfully press on as we face obstacles.

PRAYER
Great God, thank you for keeping the power on in my life. It seems that there are countless ways for the grid to fail -- most of them having to do with my personal weaknesses. In your kindness you keep the energy flowing to deal with the challenges coming at me. Help me to more fully trust you and continually acknowledge that you are the source and goal of my hope. Amen.

Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
