THE SAVIOR

PSALM 38:22 (CEV)
You are the one who saves me.
Please hurry and help.

MARK 10:48-49 (ABP)
Blind Bartimaeus loudly called out to the passing Jesus, "Son of David, have mercy on me." Jesus stopped, ignoring the crowd which had become annoyed with Bart, and said, "Bring him to me."

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Don't hesitate to call out to Jesus the Savior!

PRAYER
Caring God, from the very beginning you have been saving people from enemies, infirmities, sickness, and sin. Thank you for being the Savior, even though I'm not always willing to admit my need. Give me the boldness of Bartimaeus to call out to you. I'm going to continue to trust you as my Savior. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

GOD'S DOMINION

1 SAMUEL 2:6 (NLT)
The LORD gives both death and life;
he brings some down to the grave but raises others up.

REVELATION 1:8 (NLT)
"I am the Alpha and the Omega—the beginning and the end," says the Lord God. "I am the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come—the Almighty One."

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God has the final word.

PRAYER
Eternal Lord, I am awed by your power and dominion over life and creation. I am just a small part of it, yet in your sight, I have purpose and significance -- thank you! Establish your rule and dominion first in my heart, that I may be pleasing to you and a blessing to others. Amen. (Daily Texts, Ground Up Grace edition)

Amen.

GOD'S COMMANDMENTS

DEUTERONMY 5:21 (MSG)
No coveting your neighbor’s wife. And no lusting for his house, field, servant, maid, ox, or donkey either—nothing that belongs to your neighbor!

2 JOHN 6 (CEV)
Love means we do what God tells us.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
If we truly love God his commandments will play a central role in our lives.

PRAYER
God, most of what you say is clearly presented. I confess, though, that I'm inclined to twist and turn your words looking for any angle that will allow me to justify my own activity. Grant me the wherewthal to overlook my desires and to focus exclusively on yours. I'm going to allow your wishes to define my life.

Amen.

PERSONAL GAIN

The 19th Sunday after Pentecost

DEUTERONOMY 16:19 (ABP)
If you end up in a position where you have to act as a judge, don’t dillydalley when it comes to delivering justice! Don't side with someone just because they are famous or they belong to an influential group. And don't entertain thoughts about personal gain. For bribes will cause even the wisest and most righteous of people to trip over their words before they crash and burn.

JOHN 5:44 (MSG)
How do you expect to get anywhere with God when you spend all your time jockeying for position with each other, ranking your rivals and ignoring God?

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Set aside all your personal ambitions to serve God and his agenda.

PRAYER
Loving God, I'm baffled that I'm so easily tempted by the prospects of quick personal gain. Save me from such diversions. I don't want to crash and burn but I recognize that even with all my faith I'm not beyond corruption. However, by your grace I'll be able to ignore the temptations and stay the course.

Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
