The 21st Sunday after Pentecost
Reformation Sunday
PSALM 84:11 (CEV)
Our LORD and our God,
you are like the sun
and also like a shield.
MARK 4:40 (CEB)
Jesus asked them, “Why are you frightened? Don’t you have faith yet?”
SUMMARY SENTENCE
Don't panic for God is the source of everything needed -- trust him.
PRAYER
You, God, hold the future of life in your hand. How is it, then, that I struggle to trust you with my life? I get anxious about the future and accomplishing some of the present tasks, too. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed by it all. Help me relax in knowing that you provide energy and protection for each new day. You've gotten me this far. I'm going to trust you for the next mile, too. Amen.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

THE GIFT OF COMFORT
ISAIAH 49:13 (CEV)
2 CORINTHIANS 1:3-4 (CEV)
Praise God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! The Father is a merciful God, who always gives us comfort. He comforts us when we are in trouble, so that we can share this same comfort with others in trouble.
SUMMARY SENTENCE
God comforts those who need it.
PRAYER
Glorious God, over and over again throughout history you have comforted your people when they need it. Thank you for holding my hand through this current trial. Forgive me for being so inwardly focused that I don't see those around me who need to receive your comfort through me. I'm going to look for ways to be a comforting presence.
Amen.
Tell the heavens and the earth
to celebrate and sing;
command every mountain
to join in the song.
The Lord's people have suffered,
but he has shown mercy
and given them comfort.

DO RIGHT
DEUTERONOMY 31:13 (NLT)
Do this so that your children who have not known these instructions will hear them and will learn to fear the LORD your God.
ROMANS 2:10-11 (CEV)
All who do right will be rewarded with glory, honor, and peace, whether they are Jews or Gentiles. God doesn't have any favorites!
SUMMARY SENTENCE
All who listen and do right, according to God's definition, will be duly rewarded
PRAYER
Glorious God, you welcome all who will listen to you and do the right thing. Forgive us for using disagreements over what is right to do nothing. Draw us together to work for good so that we might all share in your glory, honor, and peace. Amen.

FAITHFUL AND TRUSTWORTHY
DEUTERONOMY 7:9 (CEB)
Know now then that the LORD your God is the only true God! He is the faithful God, who keeps the covenant and proves loyal to everyone who loves him and keeps his commands—even to the thousandth generation!
HEBREWS 10:23 (MSG)
Let’s keep a firm grip on the promises that keep us going. He always keeps his word.
SUMMARY SENTENCE
God is faithful and trustworthy.
PRAYER
God, we have seen over and over again how faithful and reliable you are. I admit that I struggle to maintain faith when the world situation becomes discouraging. This is because you are such a unique being and we can only see the results of your activity. We rarely understand exactly how you are guiding things. Refresh my faith. I'm going to continue to trust your judgment and power. Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS
The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.
The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
