WELCOME

PSALM 24:7 (ABP)
Open up the big old gates to allow the king in all his glory to enter.

JOHN 1:12 (CEB)
But those who did welcome him,
those who believed in his name,
he authorized to become God’s children...

SUMMARY SENTENCE
When we welcome Jesus we are welcoming God, who graciously deals with us as he would any of his children.

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for coming. Forgive us for the stress we generate about your advent. But the fact is that you have been showing up on a regular basis for all time. It is normal for your children to expect and welcome you. Channel my faith into fruitful activity so that I'll have a good welcome gift for you. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

ON GUARD

PSALM 97:10 (CEB)
God guards the lives of his faithful ones,
delivering them from the power of the wicked.

2 CORINTHIANS 6:4-5, 8-9 (CEB)
Instead, we commend ourselves as ministers of God in every way. We did this with our great endurance through problems, disasters, and stressful situations. We went through beatings, imprisonments, and riots. We experienced hard work, sleepless nights, and hunger. We were treated with honor and dishonor and with verbal abuse and good evaluation. We were seen as both fake and real, as unknown and well known, as dying—and look, we are alive!

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God is our guard.

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for watching over us. I can quickly remember numerous times in recent history when I've experienced your protection. Forgive me for worrying about what is going to happen to me. Help me to trust you, regardless of the situation. And now that I'm thinking of it, I'm going to share with someone else about how you have protected me.

Amen.

THE WAY

EZRA 8:21 (ABP)
We humbled ourselves and asked God to clear the way for us to travel...

JOHN 14:6 (CEV)
"I am the way, the truth, and the life!" Jesus answered. "Without me, no one can go to the Father."

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Jesus is the way forward to where we need to go.

PRAYER
Precious Savior, set me on the right path. When I grow over-confident in my own ideas, I head in the wrong direction. Turn me around and adjust my perspective. Looking to you, I find life. Bend my will toward you and direct my thoughts, words, and deeds. On bended knee, I pray by the power of your Holy Spirit. Amen. (Daily Texts, Ground Up Grace edition)

Amen.

RETURN HOME

Christ the King Sunday

JEREMIAH 3:14 (NLT)
"Return home, you wayward children," says the Lord,
"for I am your master.
I will bring you back to the land of Israel"

LUKE 15:20 (ABP)
The wayward son picked himself up and headed home to his father. And when he was still a long way off, his father saw him on the pathway. The father was so excited that he ran out (yes, a grown man ran) to welcome him with hugs and kisses.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God is eagerly waiting to welcome you home -- if only you'll return.

PRAYER
God of grace and mercy, thank you for your warm welcome. I confess that in my shame I struggle to receive it. I avoid you or I try to justify my prodigal thoughts and actions. Help me to let go of the shame and guilt associated with my failures. I'm going to trust that you are a merciful and kind God.

Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
