CONFIDENCE ABOUT THE FUTURE

PSALM 42:11 (ABP)
Why O why -- I keep asking myself -- why am I in such a funk?
Why is my stomach tied up in knots?
I'm going to start trusting God more.
He'll turn things around and I'll be gushing with gratitude to him -- my Savior God.

2 CORINTHIANS 3:12 (CEB)
So, since we have such a hope, we act with great confidence.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
You'll live better now if you trust God for the future.

PRAYER

Faithful God, thank you for sending your Son into the world to save us. Forgive us for holding on to all those things which make us anxious. I know that letting go is easier said than done. So I'm going to trust you to lead me through the process of turning things around. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

PATIENCE AND CERTAINTY

JEREMIAH 31:28 (CEV)
In the past, I took care to uproot them, to tear them down, and to destroy them. But when that day comes, I will take care to plant them and help them grow.

JAMES 5:7 (MSG)
Meanwhile, friends, wait patiently for the Master’s Arrival. You see farmers do this all the time, waiting for their valuable crops to mature, patiently letting the rain do its slow but sure work. Be patient like that.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Wait with patient certainty that God will come through according to his schedule.

PRAYER
Generous God, you provide all that we need. Yet, I grow impatient when you don't function in accordance with my timetable and expectations. Slow me down so that patience rooted in faith becomes second nature to me. I'm going to let your rain do its work.

Amen.

GOOD NEWS

1 KINGS 8:66 (CEV)
They said goodbye and left, very happy, because of all the good things the LORD had done for his servant David and his people Israel.

LUKE 2:16-17 (NLT)
They hurried to the village and found Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby, lying in the manger. After seeing him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
When we have a good news encounter it is natural to celebrate what has happened.

PRAYER
Good God, thank you for coming into the world and sharing in our humanity. Your presence is the good news that changes everything. Forgive me for getting caught up in the echo chamber of bad news that does nothing to advance your agenda for the world. Help me to dial down the negativity and celebrate your goodness and how it is playing out in the world. I'm going to be a good news person.

Amen.

REVEALING

Christmas

JOSHUA 24:23 (CEV)
Joshua said, “But you still have some idols, like those the other nations worship. Get rid of your idols! You must decide once and for all that you really want to obey the LORD God of Israel.”

JOHN 1:18 (NLT)
No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Jesus has come to more clearly reveal God to us.

PRAYER
God, this is a great day to celebrate the gift of your Son Jesus. Thank you for sending him into the world to reveal yourself to us. Forgive me for pretending that I need to see more to fully trust you. Help me to recognize the transforming power of the incarnation. I'm going to celebrate and trust.

Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
