APPEARANCES

LEVITICUS 25:14 (ABP)
When neighbors are buying or selling from one another, make sure no one feels cheated.

2 CORINTHIANS 8:21 (ABP)
We're not only concerned about doing what is right in the eyes of the Lord, but we also want to avoid the appearance of scandal in the eyes of others.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
We bend over backward to do what's right and to do it in a way that isn't misinterpreted by others as improper.

PRAYER
Lord, thank you for your concern over fairness. I want to do right in your eyes but I'm not nearly so interested in maintaining appearances for my neighbors. Help me to be as concerned about their well-being as I am about my own. Help me to recognize how my actions might become a trip hazard in their faith. Yes, I recognize that I can't please everyone but I also see that there are ways I can nurture peace. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

WATCHING

JOB 28:24 (ABP)
God sees everything happening on earth, scanning everything under heaven.

MATTHEW 18:14 (CEB)
In the same way, my Father who is in heaven doesn’t want to lose one of these little ones.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God is looking out for even the least of people.

PRAYER
Your watchful eye, Father, sees everything. This comforts me. I am reassured that you will redirect me when I go astray. Bless me with an attentiveness that recognizes your signal to change. Thank you for your word and your faithful people who guide me. I am hope-filled knowing I am not alone in life's journey. Amen. (Daily Text, Ground Up Grace edition)

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. DRAWN TO GOD

EXODUS 15:13 (CEV)
The people you rescued
were led by your powerful love
        to your holy place.

1 PETER 3:18 (CEV)
Christ died once for our sins.
An innocent person died
     for those who are guilty.
Christ did this
     to bring you to God...

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Through Christ God continues to draw us to himself.

PRAYER
Christ Jesus, I'm in awe of your loving sacrifice and glorious resurrection which draws us into the life of God. Your story energizes me as it becomes my story. Forgive me for making your salvation story way more complicated than it needs to be. Make these things the defining story of my life. I'm going to allow you to continue to lead me. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. INTERNALIZED

PSALM 119:11 (ABP)
To prevent sin from defining my life, I've chewed on and digested your instructions. They are a mosted valued possession.

2 TIMOTHY 1:14 (CEV)
You have been trusted with a wonderful treasure. Guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit, who lives within us.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Make the most of the divine treasure that God has implanted in us.

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for taking the time to impart your guidance and wisdom. I treasure your word. It provides direction for how I think and relate to others. It points me to Jesus. I admit, though, that even with your Holy Spirit living in me and tutoring me in your ways I allow outside voices to influence me. Help me to filter out those voices so that I can continue to treasure the word living in me. I'm going to guard it with my life.

Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
