REJOICES ALWAYS. PRAY CONTINUALLY.

PSALM 33:21 (ABP)
Our hearts are bursting with joy because we trust the Lord and who he is.

1 THESSALONIANS 5:16-17 (CEB)
Rejoice always. Pray continually.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Bask in the joy that flows from the Lord and into us.

PRAYER
Glorious God, thank you for life! There is so much that could fill my life with joy. However, I confess that I allow the negativity I encounter to drag me down. It just feels like I'm important when I complain and grip about everything. Renew my spirit again so that I'm basking in the joy that comes with living life in communion with you. Even though there are tough times I'm not going to let them drag me down because I'm trusting in you. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

FRUITFULNESS

ISAIAH 55:10-11 (CEV)
Rain and snow fall from the sky
and don’t return until they have watered the ground.
Then the ground causes the plants to sprout and grow,
and they produce seeds for the farmer and food for people to eat.
In the same way, my words leave my mouth,
and they don’t come back without results.
My words make the things happen that I want to happen.
They succeed in doing what I send them to do.

JOHN15:7-8 (CEV)
Stay joined together with me, and follow my teachings. If you do this, you can ask for anything you want, and it will be given to you. Show that you are my followers by producing much fruit. This will bring honor to my Father.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Fruitfulness is always an indicator of God's activity.

PRAYER
God, you are busy creating and caring. Thank you for inviting us to work alongside you. I confess my propensity to wander and work independently of your guidance. Reestablish the bond so that your fruitfulness will be revealed through me. In this way I want my life to be about honoring you.

Amen.

BENEFITS

JEREMIAH 17:9-10 (ERV)
Nothing can hide its evil as well as the human mind.
It can be very sick,
and no one really understands it.
But I am the Lord,
and I can look into a person’s heart.
I can test a person’s mind and decide what each one should have.

GALATIANS 6:9 (NLT)
So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Those who allow God to change them will reap incredible benefits.

PRAYER
God, I'm grateful for your rewards program. I confess, though, that I struggle with consistency and persistence. I too easily take my eyes off the goal. Grant me spiritual tenacity that spills into all dimensions of my life. I'm looking forward to reaping the benefits that come from participating in your good for the world.

Amen.

UNDER GOD'S CARE

The 5th Sunday after Epiphany

ECCLESIASTES 7:14 (ABP)
When times are good -- celebrate!
But when times are bad --
ponder what's going on.
For God is behind both
the good times
and the bad times,
thus keeping us from presumtuousness
about the future.

MATTHEW 6:26 (MSG)
Look at the birds, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, careless in the care of God. And you count far more to him than birds.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Live footloose and fancy free under the care of God.

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for the gifts of time and life. I admit that I take myself way too seriously in such matters. Some days I worry over what could happen. But on other days I'm cocky and confident about what the future holds. Help me to chill and to release my presumptuousness. I'm going to put one step in front of the other, step forward, and trust you for everything along the way.

Amen.

DAILYTEXTS.ORG

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
