DON'T HESITATE TO CALL

PSALM 130:1-2 (CEV)
Lord, I am in deep trouble,
so I am calling to you for help.
My Lord, listen to me.

LUKE 18:38-39 (CEB)
The blind man shouted, “Jesus, Son of David, show me mercy.” Those leading the procession scolded him, telling him to be quiet, but he shouted even louder, “Son of David, show me mercy.”

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Don't hesitate to call out to God when you need help of any sort.

PRAYER
God, I really admire the blind man who ignored the crowd and persisted in calling out to Jesus. And I admire you for being so responsive and eager to extend mercy. Forgive me for worrying so much about what people think. I need boldness to own up to my weaknesses without apology. I'm going to trust that you'll have a warm and positive response. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

COMING!

PSALM 98:9 (ABP)
GOD is coming as the judge who will deliver justice and set things right in the world. Everyone will be treated fairly.

REVELATION 15:4 (ABP)
Who will not honor you, Lord? Your name will be recognized and respected as no other, for you are totally unlike any other. The peoples of the world will bow before you as the magnitude of all the just and right things you've done is revealed.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
The world can look forward to the coming of judgment day.

PRAYER
Holy God, you are worthy of all honor and praise and glory. Yet we miss it all because we are so preoccupied with our small worlds. Use the promise of impending judgment and justice to stir us into engagement with the big picture. I'm going to start living now in light of then.

Amen.

SAFE

The First Sunday in Lent

PROVERBS 3:26 (MSG)
Because God will be right there with you;
he’ll keep you safe and sound.

JOHN 17:15 (CEV)
Father, I don't ask you to take my followers out of the world, but keep them safe from the evil one.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God is our safety officer looking out for us in the midst of the attacks we all experience.

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for looking out for us. I admit that I carry a lot of unnecessary fear around with me because I struggle to trust that you're there. But your promises are great and your track record is stellar. Nurture faith in me. I don't need to live in a safe world because I know that you are keeping me as safe as I need to be.

Amen.

KNOWING GOD

HOSEA 4:1 (MSG)
Attention all Israelites! God’s Message!
   God indicts the whole population:
“No one is faithful. No one loves.
No one knows the first thing about God."

JAMES 1:5 (MSG)
If you don’t know what you’re doing, pray to the Father. He loves to help. You’ll get his help, and won’t be condescended to when you ask for it.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Feel free to ask God for clarification.

PRAYER
God, you graciously share yourself with us – your knowledge, your wisdom, your presence – all at a level which we can handle. Yet, I don't prioritize what you share, instead preferring to make my own way. So, I am asking that you would help me set aside my autonomous approach to life and fill me with divine wisdom. I'm fully expecting to hear from you.

Amen.

DAILYTEXTS.ORG

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
