LEFT-OVERS

LEVITICUS 26:5 (CEV)
Your harvest of grain and grapes will be so abundant, that you won’t know what to do with it all. You will eat and be satisfied, and you will live in safety.

MATTHEW 14:20
Everyone ate until they were full, and they filled twelve baskets with the leftovers.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Our God is the God of left-overs.

PRAYER
Generous God, your abundance is greater than our need. Forgive me for approaching you as though you are a miser. Help me to recognize the abundance given to us and to be satisfied. I'm going to share the left-overs in my basket. Amen.

SEND ME

ISAIAH 6:8 (NLT)
Then I heard the Lord asking, “Whom should I send as a messenger to this people? Who will go for us?”

I said, “Here I am. Send me.”

2 CORINTHIANS 5:20 (CEB)
So we are ambassadors who represent Christ. God is negotiating with you through us. We beg you as Christ’s representatives, “Be reconciled to God!”

SUMMARY SENTENCE
We're called to represent Christ and his message.

PRAYER
Thank you, Lord, for commissioning us to serve as your ambassadors representing you and your kingdom. I confess, though, that my priority has been in representing my own interests. Help me to make the shift so that I'm living into my calling. Send me -- wherever and to whomever. Amen.

INCONSEQUENTIAL PEOPLE PRAISING GOD

1 SAMUEL 1:11 (CEB)
Then Hannah made this promise: “LORD of heavenly forces, just look at your servant’s pain and remember me! Don’t forget your servant! Give her a boy! Then I’ll give him to the Lord for his entire life. No razor will ever touch his head.”

LUKE 1:46-48 (CEV)
Mary said:
With all my heart
I praise the Lord,
and I am glad because of God my Savior.
He cares for me,
his humble servant.
From now on,
all people will say
God has blessed me.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God does some of his greatest miracles through humble people who turn to him.

PRAYER
I'm grateful, Lord, that you care for the people who are inconsequential to the rest of the world. Forgive me for thinking that only big shots make a difference. Give me a humble heart willing to call on you. I'm going to be the one who blesses you even if I remain unknown. Amen.

CREATING AND SUSTAINING

The First Sunday in Lent

PSALM 102:25 (CEB)
You laid the earth’s foundations long ago;
the skies are your handiwork.

1 CORINTHIANS 1:8 (CEB)
He will also confirm your testimony about Christ until the end so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God is at work creating and sustaining.

PRAYER
Creator God, in spite of the fact that we are prone to tear things apart, you continue to hold things together. Reassure me of your sustaining involvement when I start to feel frustrated by my own failures and those of the world around me. I can see that it is all about you. Amen.

DAILYTEXTS.ORG

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2011 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
