GOD'S WORD

2 SAMUEL 7:28 (CEB)
LORD God, you are truly God! Your words are trustworthy, and you have promised this good thing to your servant.

HEBREWS 4:12 (CEB)
God’s word is living, active, and sharper than any two-edged sword. It penetrates to the point that it separates the soul from the spirit and the joints from the marrow. It’s able to judge the heart’s thoughts and intentions.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God's word is powerful and reliable.

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for your words -- words that reveal reality. Sometimes I find it uncomfortable seeing the truth about my own life. Help me to trust in the power of your message to change my life. I don't want to be stuck so I'm going to keep my faith trained on you. I'm going to trust your gracious promises. Amen.

PRAYER

NEHEMIAH 1:6 (MSG)
Pay attention to this prayer of your servant that I’m praying day and night in intercession for your servants...

JAMES 5:16 (MSG)
The prayer of a person living right with God is something powerful to be reckoned with.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Prayer is worth the effort.

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for listening to our prayers. Forgive me for doubting that it's all worth the effort. Show me how to live in constant prayer so that I can have a part in what you're doing. Amen.

PRAISE

NEHEMIAH 9:5 (CEV)
Stand and shout praises
     to your LORD,
     the eternal God!
Praise his wonderful name,
     though he is greater
     than words can express.

EPHESIANS 5:19 (CEV)
When you meet together, sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, as you praise the Lord with all your heart.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Even though the words are inadequate, direct your praises to our glorious God.

PRAYER
Glorious God, you are worthy of all attention, all praise, and all honor. Thank you for placing me in a community of faithful followers who honor you through songs of praise. I acknowledge that my voice cracks and that I sometimes grumble about the music. Free me to focus on the music behind the music -- your glory and grace. I'm not going to get hung up on the style, the volume, or the shortcomings of the musicians. I'm going to focus instead on praising the Lord with all my heart. Amen.

NEW SONG

PSALM 98:1 (MSG)
Sing to GOD a brand-new song.
He’s made a world of wonders!

COLOSSIANS 3:16 (CEB)
Sing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Let your thankfulness surface as a song sung to God.

PRAYER
Lord God, you are worthy of a new song. All the old songs I've sung are unable to express appropriate gratitude for all the new that you are doing in my life. All the old songs are whining dirges that fail to take into account the incredible things you're doing. Help me to look past the negativity and on to the fresh and new that is sprouting up, drawn by the sunlight that radiates from Christ Jesus. This is wonderful! All that flows from my life will be a new song. Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2011 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
