YOUR WORDS

GENESIS 50:21 (ABP)
Joseph spoke kindly to his worried brothers, "Relax, I'll look out for you and your families."

EPHESIANS 4:29 (ABP)

Watch your words. Don't let anything foul or hurtful come out of your mouth. Instead, use your words to extend grace and build others up.

SUMMARY SENTENCE

Ask yourself, "Am I using words to cut others down or build them up?"

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for the gift of speech. I admit that I'm not always kind with my words. Sometimes they just slip out before I can control them. Slow me down so that I'm thinking before speaking. I'm going to allow your Spirit to work in me so that my words convey only your grace. Amen.

PONDER

PSALM 119:148 (CEV)
I lie awake at night,
thinking of your promises.

LUKE 2:19 (CEV)
Mary kept thinking about all this and wondering what it meant.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
The model believer ponders the words and activity of God.

PRAYER
God, one of the great privileges in my life has been to see you at work. There are things I can't explain otherwise. Yet, I still allow unhealthy thoughts to live in my head. Nudge them out so that I'm musing on you 24/7. Even when I'm unable to sleep I'm going to go back over in my mind your words and how I've seen them worked out. Amen.

BLESSED TO BLESS

DEUTERONOMY 6:11-12 (ABP)
Once the Lord has blessed you with success don't forget to honor the Lord.

1 JOHN 3:17 (NLT)
If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?

SUMMARY SENTENCE
We've been blessed so that we can bless.

PRAYER
Thank you, Father, for the people in my life who, at various times, provided for my needs. I regret the times I cling to my possessions and money. Open my heart and my eyes to people -- far and near -- who need something I already have. May I share out of the abundance of your love for me. Amen. (Daily Texts, Ground Up Grace edition)

GOD'S LEADERSHIP

PROVERBS 3:11 (MSG)
But don’t, dear friend, resent GOD’s discipline;
don’t sulk under his loving correction.

JAMES 3:17 (CEV)
But the wisdom that comes from above leads us to be pure, friendly, gentle, sensible, kind, helpful, genuine, and sincere.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Embrace the correction and wisdom that God gives.

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for intervening in my life. I admit that I push back against your guidance at times -- especially when I'm trying to prove myself. Wrap me in your wisdom so that I become someone who reflects your character. I'm going to let you lead me so that I'm among the pure, friendly, gentle, sensible, kind, helpful, genuine, and sincere. Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2011 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
