HOPE

PSALM 33:20 (CEB)
We put our hope in the LORD.
He is our help and our shield.

ROMANS 8:24 (CEV)
And this hope is what saves us.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
We can't really see how everything is going to work out, yet our faith in God causes us to be hopeful about what's coming.

PRAYER
God, you are the armor that will protect us when the going gets rough. Forgive me for worrying about the future -- for doubting that you'll look out for me. Restore my hope. Just as I had faith when I began to trust Christ as my Savior so do I have faith in him as I anticipate what's coming. Amen.

PARTNERSHIP

HAGGAI 2:4 (CEB)
"Be strong, all you people of the land," says the LORD. "Work, for I am with you..."

1 CORINTHIANS 3:9 (CEB)
We are God’s coworkers...

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God has given us partnership in his work.

PRAYER
Lord God, we are so blessed that you have included us as partners in your work of restoring creation. Forgive me for thinking that I have to solve all of these problems on my own or that what I do is worthless. Help me to see how I fit in and to trust you to make sense of all that is happening around me. I'm going to work with you -- and that is a blessing. Amen.

JESUS-FOCUSED

ISAIAH 42:1 (MSG)
Take a good look at my servant.
I’m backing him to the hilt.
He’s the one I chose,
and I couldn’t be more pleased with him.

LUKE 4:22 (CEV)
All the people started talking about Jesus and were amazed at the wonderful things he said. They kept on asking, “Isn’t he Joseph’s son?”

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Take a good look at Jesus and bask in the wonder.

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for sending Jesus to save us. I confess that I let my focus drift from the wonder of who he is and what he's doing, toward secondary issues. Keep me Jesus-focused. I'm going to live in live-changing awe. Amen.

JESUS' BUILDING PROJECT

DEUTERONOMY 2:7 (NLT)
For the LORD your God has blessed you in everything you have done. He has watched your every step through this great wilderness.

MATTHEW 16:18 (ABP)
Jesus said, "You are Peter -- the rock on whom I'll build my church. And the forces of death will not be able to defeat it."

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Be encouraged because no matter how grim things look at times, Jesus' building project will be completed according to his plans.

PRAYER
Thank you, Jesus, for your church. I confess that I sometimes have trouble saying that. It's easy to get discouraged over her shortcomings and ugly failures. My perspective is so limited that I see only the setbacks and don't notice how you are leading and expanding your church. Open my eyes so that my attitude more accurately reflects the glory of what you're doing. Amen.

DAILYTEXTS.ORG

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2011 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
