GLOBAL GOOD NEWS

ISAIAH 42:10 (CEB)
Sing to the LORD a new song!
Sing his praise from the ends of the earth!

COLOSSIANS 1:23 (NLT)
Don’t drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News. The Good News has been preached all over the world...

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Stick with the global good news -- the hope of Christ for your life and the world.

PRAYER
Glorious God, thank you for the good news of new life in Christ. I want to give my life to singing this new song but I allow other songs to become earworms in my brain. I don't understand how this is but I know that I need you to intervene and again fill me with your new song. I'm going to sing for the whole world to hear and join in the praise. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name; your Kingdom come; your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

GOD THE GREAT PLANNER

ISAIAH 25:1 (MSG)
You’ve done your share of miracle-wonders,
well-thought-out plans, solid and sure.

EPHESIANS 1:5 (MSG)
Long, long ago he decided to adopt us into his family through Jesus Christ. (What pleasure he took in planning this!)

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God is the great planner.

PRAYER
God, you are rock solid, as are your plans. Forgive me for giving in to discouragement and doubt when I read the news. Help me to trust you for this day, and tomorrow, and the next, and on. Instead of getting caught up in the chaos of the moment, I'm going to rely on what you continue to do through Christ Jesus. You've got a plan.

Amen.

GOD'S FAVOR

EXODUS 33:17 (MSG)
GOD said to Moses: “All right. Just as you say; this also I will do, for I know you well and you are special to me. I know you by name.”

JOHN 10:14
I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me...

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God looks out for those who are in his favor.

PRAYER
Good Shepherd God, thank you for watching over me -- for caring about me when no one else does. I admit that sometimes I use your favor as an excuse for careless living. I end up getting myself into trouble and I have to call out for help -- only to discover that you were there watching over me the whole time. Help me to experience the joy of your unmerited favor. I'm even going to tell others about your care.

Amen.

KINDNESS

ZECHARIAH 8:17 (NLT)
Don’t scheme against each other. Stop your love of telling lies that you swear are the truth. I hate all these things, says the LORD.

EPHESIANS 4:32 (NLT)
Be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Let your words and deeds ooze with the kindness of Christ.

PRAYER
Merciful God, your kindness to us is incredible. I don't understand how it is, then, that even while pledging allegiance to you and your kingdom, I get so worked up about the stupid things others do. I easily bad-mouth them and occasionally slip into exaggerating their faults to make the point. I need a strong dose of your kindness to settle into my heart. I'm going to focus on being the kind of person Jesus is.

Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2011 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
