GOD'S KINDNESS

JOB 10:12 (CEV)
You, the source of my life,
showered me with kindness
and watched over me.

JAMES 5:11 (CEV)
In fact, we praise the ones who endured the most. You remember how patient Job was and how the Lord finally helped him. The Lord did this because he is so merciful and kind.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God operates out of his kindness.

PRAYER
You, God, shower us with kindness. Help me to keep your gifts forefront in my mind. I so easily forget when I'm swamped with challenging circumstances. I'm going to make a point of counting my blessings today. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name; your Kingdom come; your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

LISTENING

1 SAMUEL 3:19 (MSG)
Samuel grew up. God was with him, and Samuel’s prophetic record was flawless.

LUKE 10:16 (NLT)
Then he said to the disciples, “Anyone who accepts your message is also accepting me. And anyone who rejects you is rejecting me. And anyone who rejects me is rejecting God, who sent me.”

SUMMARY SENTENCE
You can't accept God without accepting his message.

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for sending messengers and for your Word as it comes to us through scripture. I confess that I'm a pick and choose kind of person who accepts your message when it is convenient and fits with my agenda. I understand that needs to change and I'm looking for you to implement that change in my life. I'm going to pour more of myself into listening to what you have to say.

Amen.

EXPECTATIONS

JEREMIAH 31:34 (CEV)
No longer will they have to teach one another to obey me. I, the LORD, promise that all of them will obey me, ordinary people and rulers alike. I will forgive their sins and forget the evil things they have done.

JOHN 6:28-29 (CEV)

“What exactly does God want us to do?” the people asked.
Jesus answered, “God wants you to have faith in the one he sent.”

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God's expectations are the same for all people -- that we put our trust in Christ Jesus.

PRAYER
God of the least and the greatest, thank you for loving all people and for loving me. I am grateful that you make yourself known to me. Knowing you, I believe in you. Believing in you, I trust in you. Trusting you, I am eager to serve the least and the greatest of people. Help me love them well. Amen. (Daily Texts, Ground Up Grace edition)

Amen.

NEW THINKING AND LIVING

PSALM 11:7 (CEV)
The LORD always does right
and wants justice done.

EPHESIANS 4:23-24 (ABP)

On the inside, let the Spirit give you a new way of thinking. On the outside of your new person, live in a way that reflects the true justice and unique purity of God's own being.

SUMMARY SENTENCE

Live according to the justice of God.

PRAYER
True and just God, thank you for the new life that you are creating in me through Christ Jesus. I acknowledge that my thoughts are less than pure and that I don't always treat people right. Since I don't seem able to change that on my own, I'm looking to you to change me. My goal is to live both an internal life and an external life that mirrors your life.

Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2011 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
