FORGIVEN

PSALM 38:4 (ABP)
My wrongdoing weighs heavily on me;
dragging me down.

COLOSSIANS 2:14 (MSG)
All sins forgiven, the slate wiped clean, that old arrest warrant canceled and nailed to Christ’s cross.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Through the action of Christ, our sins have all been forgiven and no longer drag us down.

PRAYER
Dear Savior, I'm grateful for the cross and resurrection which together renders my sin moot. This reality hasn't yet fully sunk into my heart and at times I still let sin drag me down. Lift me up! Encourage me to live according to what Christ has down. This is the good news by which I'm going to live and which I'm going to share. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name; your Kingdom come; your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

GOD'S GRAND GRACIOUSNESS

PSALM 77:9 (NLT)
Has God forgotten to be gracious?
Has he slammed the door on his compassion?

ROMANS 5:20 (ABP)
The Law given to Moses amplifies our failure. But as awareness of our sinfulness increases, the Law also shows us how grand the grace of God is -- grander than all our failures.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God's grace is greater than our sinfulness.

PRAYER
God, your grace is the good news that changes our lives. Forgive me for beating myself up when I fail. Help me to take my sinfulness seriously without letting it drag me down. I'm going to wallow in your grace.

Amen.

FOUNDATION

1 SAMUEL 2:8 (MSG)
For the very structures of earth are GOD’s;
he has laid out his operations on a firm foundation.

JOHN 1:1 (CEV)
In the beginning was the one
who is called the Word.
The Word was with God
and was truly God.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Trust God for he is the designer who has been here from the very beginning.

PRAYER
Creator God, thank you for sending Jesus the Word into the world to reset the foundation. Forgive us for the way we panic when there are flare-ups of evil and chaos in the world. We try to overcome violence with violence. We look for ways to seize power. But these are not a part of your plan. Help me to trust you and your solutions. I'm going to rest on Christ the sure foundation.

Amen.

WORDS WE NEED

ISAIAH 28:29 (CEB)
This also comes from the LORD of heavenly forces,
who gives wondrous counsel and increases wisdom.

EPHESIANS 2:17 (CEB)
When he came, he announced the good news of peace to you who were far away from God and to those who were near.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Christ came with words that we need to hear.

PRAYER
God of peace and wisdom, thank you for speaking to us. I'm sorry that I too easily tune you out in order to tune into the static generated by the world in which we live. I need to hear what you are saying. I need it all to sink in and change my life. I need you to help me focus on what you're saying because I'm unable to do it on my own. Wrap your loving arms around me and whisper into my ear the words of wisdom and peace that I desperately need. I ask this in the name of Christ Jesus the Living Word.

Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2011 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
