DIVINE INTERVENTION

ISAIAH 64:9 (MSG)
Don’t keep a permanent account of wrongdoing.
Keep in mind, please, we are your people—all of us.

1 JOHN 2:1 (ABP)
My dear children, I am writing all this to help you stay away from sin. But if you do sin, Jesus Christ, who is qualified to represent you because he always does the right thing -- Jesus will intervene, speaking to the Father on your behalf.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Stop worrying about your failures because Jesus intervenes for sinful people.

PRAYER
God, you (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) are totally righteous. We, on the other hand, through what we do and what we fail to do, are bunglers in the righteousness department. Show me how to take my sinfulness seriously without fixating on this problem. I'm going to confidently move forward because I trust that you have everything under control. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name; your Kingdom come; your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

HAPPINESS

PSALM 81:1 (ABP)
Cheer up and give a shout-out to God
who makes us strong!

2 CORINTHIANS 6:4, 10 (CEV)
In everything and in every way we show we truly are God's servants... and we are always happy, even in times of suffering. Although we are poor, we have made many people rich. And though we own nothing, everything is ours.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Our happiness transcends the tough times because our happiness is rooted in service to God.

PRAYER
God, we give a shout-out to you -- for we are relying on your strength and not our own. Sometimes we allow the circumstances to drag us down -- even when we know that you're on top of things. Forgive us for tying our sense of happiness so tightly to the situation. Help us to find our joy in serving you.

Amen.

REFINING FIRE

The Sixth Sunday of Eastertide

ZECHARIAH 13:9 (NLT)
I will bring that group through the fire
and make them pure.
I will refine them like silver
and purify them like gold.
They will call on my name,
and I will answer them.

1 PETER 1:6-7 (NLT)
So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Don't sweat the trials you're going through because they only serve to refine your life into something that God will be proud of.

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for watching over my life. I confess that I get anxious when the hard times come and I begin to wonder if it's all worth the effort. Help me to trust you and recognize the progress that you are making in the reshaping of my life. I'm going to relax snd trust you through both the good times and the bad so that Christ Jesus is honored.

Amen.

AVARICE

ECCLESIASTES 5:10 (NLT)
Those who love money will never have enough. How meaningless to think that wealth brings true happiness!

1 TIMOTHY 6:8-9 (NLT)
So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content. But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Preoccupation with acquiring wealth leads to nothing but trouble.

PRAYER
Lord, your love is beyond our understanding. Yet it is real and tangible. However, greed clings to us in ways that are harmful not only to ourselves but to the people around us. Help us to turn from our sinful ways so that we might become content with what we have and generous toward others. Amen. (Daily Texts, Ground Up Grace edition)

Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2011 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
