GOD IS LIGHT

ISAIAH 60:19 (ABP)
GOD will light things up for you -- forever. He will be the source of your honor.

1 JOHN 1:5 (MSG)
This, in essence, is the message we heard from Christ and are passing on to you: God is light, pure light; there’s not a trace of darkness in him.

SUMMARY SENTENCE

If we allow him into our lives, God's light will drive out all the darkness.

PRAYER
Perfect Light, you wrap me in the warmth of your glory. I wait in anticipation for the day when all is made perfect in you. When the darkness creeps in, I am tempted to turn to my own solutions instead of searching for your glimmering light. Help me press forward as you illuminate the path to everlasting light. Amen. (Daily Texts, Ground Up Grace edition)

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name; your Kingdom come; your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

FAITH

GENESIS 15:6 (ABP)
Abram put his trust in GOD. It was on the basis of that faith that GOD recognized Abram as someone who lived right.

GALATIANS 3:7 (ABP)
It's pretty clear that the real children of Abraham are those who have the same kind of faith he had. That is, those who put their trust in Christ are those with the greatest family resemblance.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
The clearest way to have faith in God is to put your trust in Christ.

PRAYER
Great God, you called our father Abraham to leave behind his secure life and to trust you for a new life. I confess that I'm not the most trusting person. I like to see everything clearly laid out for me. You've done that in Christ and yet I still struggle to have day-in-day-out faith. Take the limited faith that I have and multiply it so that I'm trusting you for each and every moment. I'm not sure what the journey involves but I know that you'll get me to where I need to be. Amen.

Amen.

GOD-CENTERED LIVES

ISAIAH 66:2 (ABP)
Listen up! It's I, GOD the creator, speaking. I'm the one behind everything that is. Yet, with such grand credentials, you need to know that those I revere the most are the simple and humble people who depend only on me -- and revere my word.

JOHN 17:17 (CEV)
Your word is the truth. So let this truth make them completely yours.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God's message is about transforming us into God-centered people.

PRAYER
Thank you, Jesus, for speaking truth into my life. I admit that I don't always pay close attention but that is my fault -- not yours. Don't give up on me. Keep leading and speaking until my life is totally God-centered. I'm going to listen closely and do what you say to do until I'm totally aligned with you. Amen.

Amen.

GOD'S FAITHFULNESS

The 4th Sunday after Pentecost

PSALM 66:16 (MSG)
All believers, come here and listen,
let me tell you what God did for me.

GALATIANS 2:20 (CEB)
I live by faith, indeed, by the faithfulness of God’s Son, who loved me and gave himself for me.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
It's all God's doing.

PRAYER
Glorious God, you have been so generous. I'm especially thinking of all that you did by sending your Son into the world to secure our salvation -- my salvation. It is an honor to put my faith in such a faithful God. It's true, my faith is incomplete and falters at times. But you forgive and continue to love me. So please continue to nurture my faith. I want to develop a mature faith that reflects your faithfulness. Amen.

Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2011 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
