ENERGY

ISAIAH 40:29 (ABP)
GOD empowers the powerless and strengthens the exhausted.

JOHN 6:35 (MSG)
Jesus said, "I am the Bread of Life. The person who aligns with me hungers no more and thirsts no more, ever."

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Our batteries recharge when we're plugged into Jesus.

PRAYER
Great God, you are full of energy. But I confess that I let the world deplete my power. I need you to recharge my spiritual batteries so that I can deal with the stuff life is currently throwing at me. I'm going to stay plugged into you so that your energy flows through me. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

RENEWED STRENGTH

ISAIAH 40:30-31 (CEV)
Even young people get tired,
then stumble and fall.
But those who trust the LORD
will find new strength.
They will be strong like eagles
soaring upward on wings;
they will walk and run
without getting tired.

2 TIMOTHY 2:1 (CEB)
So, my child, draw your strength from the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Draw your strength from the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

PRAYER
Mighty God, it is so easy to get discouraged when life drags us down. Things break, illness happens, and things don't go according to plan. These events exhaust me and zap all of my energy. I ask that you renew my strength of spirit so I can handle all of these challenges with your grace. I'm going to look to you to pick me up and keep me standing.

Amen.

24/7

ISAIAH 62:6 (CEV)
Jerusalem, on your walls
I have stationed guards,
whose duty it is
to speak out day and night,
without resting.

2 PETER 1:19 (CEV)
All of this makes us even more certain that what the prophets said is true. So you should pay close attention to their message, as you would to a lamp shining in some dark place. You must keep on paying attention until daylight comes and the morning star rises in your hearts.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
The channel of communication between God and his people is open 24/7.

PRAYER

Listening God, you're there 24/7 to listen and respond to our issues. Thank you for those who are on duty to facilitate communication. Even though I'm often like a kid who only hears what he wants to hear, help me to tune into what you're saying about the situation today. I'm going to listen.

Amen.

GO TO THE TOP

The First Sunday in Advent

DEUTERONOMY 4:23 (CEV)
Always remember the agreement that the LORD your God made with you, and don't make an idol in any shape or form.

COLOSSIANS 1:15 (MSG)
We look at this Son and see the God who cannot be seen. We look at this Son and see God’s original purpose in everything created.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
When dealing with God don't accept anything less than the best -- the Son of God.

PRAYER
Almighty God, you have no equal. Yet there are so many distractions which function as idols in the world today. I'm tempted to align my life with people who offer political or economic solutions. I'm easily swayed. Refresh my imagination so that I'm swayed only by your Son and his vision for the world. I'm going to go all in only with him -- and you.

Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2011 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
