LIGHT SHAFT

ISAIAH 2:5 (ABP)
Come on people! Let's move forward in the light God is shining on the pathway.

JOHN 8:12 (MSG)
Jesus once again addressed them: “I am the world’s Light. No one who follows me stumbles around in the darkness. I provide plenty of light to live in.”

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Live within the shaft of Jesus' light

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for providing a beam of light in which we can walk. I confess that curiosity draws me into the darkness outside the beam. I don't understand what it is about dark things that fascinates me. Give me a clear mind and a faithful heart so I can focus on what's in the light ahead of me -- ignoring the draw of the rest. I want to live in the shaft of Jesus' light so that as it is further extended the darkness itself is shattered. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

HOLINESS

The Fourth Sunday in Lent

1 SAMUEL 2:2 (MSG)
Nothing and no one is holy like God...

1 PETER 1:15 (MSG)
...let yourselves be pulled into a way of life shaped by God’s life, a life energetic and blazing with holiness. God said, “I am holy; you be holy.”

SUMMARY SENTENCE
We are called to live lives shaped by God's uniquely pure holiness.

PRAYER
God, thank you for choosing us to uniquely live lives patterned according to yours. We confess that we fail to be different and are too often content to live with impurity -- impurity that you have offered to purge from us. Help me to step up to the plate and enter into the way of life to which you call us. I want to live a life energetic and blazing with holiness.

Amen.

THE HARD ROAD

PSALM 14:3 (CEB)
All of them have turned bad.
   Everyone is corrupt.
   No one does good—
   not even one person!

MATTHEW 7:14 (ABP)
The abrupt turnoff onto the road leading to LIFE isn't always obvious. And the road itself is a bit arduous. Few people are willing to make the trip.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Traveler be aware; the obstacles are great and few are willing to make the journey.

PRAYER
Good Shepherd, I am thankful that you are with me on the hard roads. You walk with me into life. Keep me from straying to thoughts of vengeance that fill me with hostility. Only your grace can overcome my anger. Forgive my resentments. Today I pray to keep forgiving those who have hurt me. Amen. (Daily Texts, Ground Up Grace edition)

Amen.

INTEGRITY

JEREMIAH 5:3 (ABP)
GOD, I know that when you examine your people you're checking for integrity.

LUKE 16:10 (NLT)
If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
As you measure success in your life make sure that integrity is a part of the criteria.

PRAYER
Faithful God, you're looking to refill your world with truth and justice. And you're looking to your people to follow Christ in establishing a beachhead for a kingdom where faithfulness and integrity are the norm. I apologize for falling short of my portion of the assignment. I'm too easily sucked into the agenda of the enemy. Forgive me and give me a new passion for your kingdom -- starting with faithfulness in even the smallest of things. May your kingdom come and your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2011 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
