Commandments

The Lord declared his covenant to you, which he commanded you to do -- the Ten Commandments -- and wrote them on two stone tablets. ~ Deuteronomy 4:13 (CEB)

This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. ~ John 15:12 (NLT)

Frankly, God, I don't like being told what to do. But you know that. And you have given us your instructions for our own good. Help me to take your commandments seriously. Please be gentle with me when I forget or intentionally ignore your word. Correct me but do it out of love -- the same love you have called us to exhibit. I am set on following your instructions. Amen.

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
