Startling

Christmas Eve

The shepherds were very afraid. The angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid. I have some very good news for you—news that will make everyone happy. Today your Savior was born in David’s town. He is the Messiah, the Lord." ~ Luke 2:9b-11 (ERV)

Lord God, sometimes even good news is startling. Help us to recover from the shock that comes once we start to realize the extent of your faithfulness and generosity. We want to join with the shepherds in celebrating the coming of the Messiah. We want to share that good news with others. We also want to start living God-like lives of faithfulness and generosity. Draw us deeper into the story that transforms all who embrace it and the world which was made for it. Amen.

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
