Rotting

If you respect the Lord, you will hate evil. ~ Proverbs 8:13a (CEV)

...consider yourselves to be dead as far as sin is concerned. Now you believe in Christ Jesus. So consider yourselves to be alive as far as God is concerned. ~ Romans 6:11 (NIRV)

Christ Jesus, it seems pretty clear. You have conquered death. So there is no legitimate place for anything that is sinful or evil in my life. Those things are dead. And carrying rotting dead flesh around with me is repulsive. I pray that you would help me to identify and give me the power to remove anything dead that is still lingering in my life. I want to live fully for Christ. And that means getting rid of some things which no longer belong in my life anyway. It's all good. Amen.

Challenging Words

  • Legitimate -- If something is legitimate it rightfully belongs. It is allowable, permissible.
  • Repulsive -- If you dislike something so much that it makes you feel sick, it is repulsive. Icky, troubling.
  • Lingering -- lasting a long time, slow to end

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
