Darkness and Light

You are in for trouble, if you try to hide your plans from the Lord! Or if you think what you do in the dark can’t be seen. ~ Isaiah 29:15 (CEV)

Have nothing to do with the things done in darkness, which are not worth anything. But show that they are wrong... But the light makes all things easy to see... ~ Ephesians 5:11,13 (NCV)
Lord, we can't hide anything from you -- not even the things we do under the cover of darkness. There are no secret sins. Your light reveals all. Sometimes I wish that were not the case. I feel like what I do in private is only my business. But that is obviously not the case. And indeed, your light often protects me from the misdeeds and deceptions of others. So, it is a good thing -- something I can live with -- but only with your help. Please continue to remind me of your light -- not so that I walk around afraid that I might get caught but so that I can enjoy the wonderful life that happens only in the light. It's not so much that you are protecting your honor but that you are protecting me. And I am grateful for that. Amen.

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
