Foreigners

The Lord defends the rights of orphans and widows. He cares for foreigners and gives them food and clothing. And you should also care for them, because you were foreigners in Egypt. ~ Deuteronomy 10:18-19a (CEV)

Jesus: When I was a foreigner living among you, you welcomed me and made me feel like I belonged. ~ Matthew 25:35b (ABP)
Lord,

THANKS: Thank you again for caring about the poor and marginalized.

REGRETS: Even though I don't care as consistently as you care, I do care. And I get really angry when people blame all of our problems on foreigners. I swell up with righteous indignation -- even though I don't have a perfect record myself.

INTERCESSION: Show me, please, how I can channel my anger into something positive and helpful to the people who are displaced from their own lands and islands. Help me to calm down and think clearly. I need wisdom.

PURPOSE: I'm going to show love to you by treating those whom others have pushed to the margins of society with respect and care.

Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
