OBEDIENCE

Ash Wednesday -- the beginning of Lent

DEUTERONOMY 28:2-3 (MSG)
All these blessings will come down on you and spread out beyond you because you have responded to the Voice of God, your God:
     God’s blessing inside the city,
     God’s blessing in the country...

LUKE 11:28 (CEB)
Jesus said, “Happy rather are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.”

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Those who obediently respond to God's directions experience his blessing.

PRAYER
God, as we start the season of Lent today I am asking that you'd guide me into attentiveness. Clear away anything that hinders my ability to listen and obey. I know that obedience is not a popular word today but I want it to characterize the way that I relate to you as I follow you to the cross. I pray in the name of Christ Jesus, my Savior, Amen.

THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.
