SMUG AND NAIVE

ZEPHANIAH 1:12 (ABP)
   I will punish the smug -- those sitting on their fat butts thinking that GOD is indifferent to good or evil.

REVELATION 3:17-18 (CEV)
    You claim to be rich and successful and to have everything you need. But you don't know how bad off you really are. You are pitiful, poor, blind, and naked.
    Buy your gold from me. It has been refined in a fire, and it will make you rich. Buy white clothes from me. Wear them and you can cover up your shameful nakedness. Buy medicine for your eyes, so you will be able to see.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Wake up and change your ways to fit with the reality of God's existence.

PRAYER
God, I acknowledge that everything begins and ends with you. Yet, like Adam and Eve, I strive toward autonomy and try to live apart from you and your influence. I know that it doesn't make sense but I do it anyway. Help me to pull closer to you and to receive what I need from you. Thank you for the full life that you have for me through Christ Jesus. I'm going to receive him, his agenda, and his healing, Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2011 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
