PSALM 138:6 (CEB)
Even though the LORD is high,
he can still see the lowly,
but God keeps his distance from the arrogant.
LUKE 12:19-20 (MSG)
Then Jesus told them this story: “The farm of a certain rich man produced a terrific crop. He talked to himself: ‘What can I do? My barn isn’t big enough for this harvest.’ Then he said, ‘Here’s what I’ll do: I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I’ll gather in all my grain and goods, and I’ll say to myself, Self, you’ve done well! You’ve got it made and can now retire. Take it easy and have the time of your life!’
“Just then God showed up and said, ‘Fool! Tonight you die. And your barnful of goods—who gets it?’"
THE ESSENCE
The arrogant and presumptuous cut themselves off from success.
DAILY FODDER
Are the arrogant aware of their arrogance? How can they address their presumptuousness if they lack self awareness? How do you keep yourself self-aware and humble?
PRAYER
Gracious God, I'm grateful that you are aware of me and my circumstances. I admit that I'm prone to drama and inflating of self to get attention. Help me to recognize your attention and care—attention and care that flows out of your grace instead of my performance. I realize the importance of your Spirit channeling the words of Jesus into my life to keep me on track. Amen.
