PERSISTENT

JOB 42:5-6 (NLT)
Job said to God, "I had only heard about you before, but now I have seen you with my own eyes. I take back everything I said, and I sit in dust and ashes to show my repentance."

ACTS 9:3-5 (CEB)
During the journey, as he approached Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven encircled him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice asking him, “Saul, Saul, why are you harassing me?”

Saul asked, “Who are you, Lord?”

“I am Jesus, whom you are harassing,” came the reply.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
In spite of our resistance, God persists in lovingly pursuing us.

PRAYER
Lord, your presence empties us. All our illusions are crushed when you show us the truth of who we are. Thank you for pursuing us even when we are blind and cannot see. Open our eyes to know who you are and whose we are. May we rest in the grace of your shining face. Amen (Daily Texts, Ground Up Grace edition)

RESCUER

PSALM 56:13 (MSG)
You pulled me from the brink of death,
my feet from the cliff-edge of doom.
Now I stroll at leisure with God
in the sunlit fields of life.

ACTS 12:7 (MSG)
Suddenly there was an angel at his side and light flooding the room. The angel shook Peter and got him up: “Hurry!” The handcuffs fell off his wrists.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
We look to God as our rescuer.

PRAYER
Thank you, Lord, that again today you pour your wonderous light into me through the promises in your word. May your word saturate me deeply with your peace. Release me from my chains of personal preferences, people pleasing, or perfection. May the light in your word be my only guide for my passions, my perspectives, and my prayers. Amen. THE CRUSHED

PSALM 34:18 (CEB)
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted;
he saves those whose spirits are crushed.

2 CORINTHIANS 1:5 (MSG)
We have plenty of hard times that come from following the Messiah, but no more so than the good times of his healing comfort—we get a full measure of that, too.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God is there for us when we feel crushed.

PRAYER
Compassionate God, thank you for being there for us in our times of need. I admit that I get overly discouraged and am unable to recognize your presence. Open my eyes. Comfort me through my times of misery. I'm going to move forward with hope. Amen.

ONE GOD

JEREMIAH 16:20 (MSG)
Can mortals manufacture gods?

1 JOHN 5:20 (NLT)
And we know that the Son of God has come, and he has given us understanding so that we can know the true God. And now we live in fellowship with the true God because we live in fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ. He is the only true God, and he is eternal life.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Even better than having innumerable fake-gods is living in fellowship with the one true God.

PRAYER
Glorious God, we pause to recognize that you are the one and only. Although, we do allow other things to function as "gods" in our lives. We're driven by more, newer, bigger, and better. We try to generate our own sense of security while you are there extending your steadying hand. It doesn't make sense. Forgive us and help us to accept the one hand which will steady us and lead us to places no substitute can take us. I'm going to aim to be a one God person. Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
