THE CHILDREN

PSALM 8:2 (CEV)
With praises from children
and from tiny infants,
you have built a fortress.

MATTHEW 21:15-16 (MSG)
When the religious leaders saw the outrageous things he was doing, and heard all the children running and shouting through the Temple, “Hosanna to David’s Son!” they were up in arms and took him to task. “Do you hear what these children are saying?”

Jesus said, “Yes, I hear them. And haven’t you read in God’s Word, ‘From the mouths of children and babies I’ll furnish a place of praise’?”

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Jesus uses the weak, vulnerable, and needy to build his ministry.

PRAYER
God, clearly you love children. But it boggles my mind to think that you're building your kingdom through people such as them -- the weak, the vulnerable, the needy. I'm so used to looking for power and strength as the foundation of any successful endeavor. I need you to school me and adjust my way of thinking. I'm going to look at children and their likes in a whole new way. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name; your Kingdom come; your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

EXCLUSIVE

EXODUS 20:3 (ABP)
Absolutely do not honor, obey, or attend to any god -- except me.

JOHN 6:68-69 (CEV)
Simon Peter answered, “Lord, there is no one else that we can go to! Your words give eternal life. We have faith in you, and we are sure that you are God's Holy One.”

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Jesus is the ONE worthy of our undivided attention and affection.

PRAYER

Holy God -- Three-in-One -- thank you for including us in your life. You took some extreme measures to open the access. Yet, I admit that I allow myself to focus attention on lesser gods. Help me to stay focused on honoring you and you alone. I'm not going to allow room in my life for anyone but you.

Amen.

LIVE GENEROUSLY!

The Second Sunday after Pentecost

PROVERBS 11:24 (CEV)
Sometimes you can become rich
by being generous
or poor by being greedy.

ACTS 20:35 (CEV)
By everything I did, I showed how you should work to help everyone who is weak. Remember that our Lord Jesus said, “More blessings come from giving than from receiving.”

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Live generously!

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for the boomerang blessings that enrich my life. Please show me how I can become more generous with my words, my money, my attention, and my time. It's not that I need to be more blessed but I want to participate in the way that you are blessing others. That in and of itself is a blessing.

Amen.

GOD PROVIDES

PSALM 107:9 (ABP)
God quenches the thirst of the parched and he fills the hungry with good food.

PHILIPPIANS 4:19 (MSG)
You can be sure that God will take care of everything you need, his generosity exceeding even yours in the glory that pours from Jesus.

SUMMARY SENTENCE

You can be sure that God will take care of everything you need.

PRAYER
Because of you, Jesus, neither my soul is parched nor my purpose empty. You place before me a life laden with good things -- family and friends, health and hobbies. But best of all, I can feast on serving others. What joy I taste when I extend a hand! Thank you for training me to be your chef of compassion. Amen. (Daily Texts, Ground Up Grace edition)

Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
