HEALING

JEREMIAH 8:21-22 (NLT)
I hurt with the hurt of my people.
I mourn and am overcome with grief.
Is there no medicine in Gilead?
Is there no physician there?
Why is there no healing
for the wounds of my people?

LUKE 10:8-9 (CEB)
Whenever you enter a city and its people welcome you, eat what they set before you. Heal the sick who are there, and say to them, ‘God’s kingdom has come upon you.’

SUMMARY SENTENCE
People need to be healed and God sends healers.

PRAYER
God, you are well aware of just how sick we are -- the physical, spiritual, and emotional brokenness that characterizes our lives. And you've done something about it by sending Jesus into the world to be our physician. Forgive me for ignoring your medical advice and choosing to embrace old wives' tales which require less of me. Heal my judgment so that I can be restored and share in your mission of healing the world. I am going to join you in hurting with those who hurt. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name; your Kingdom come; your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

GUARD YOUR MOUTH

PSALM 141:3 (CEB)
Set a guard over my mouth, LORD;
keep close watch over the door that is my lips.

EPHESIANS 4:29 (NLT)
Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Watch what you say so that your influence will be positive.

PRAYER
God, thank you for your kind and encouraging words. I admit that I'm not always eager to receive them because you’re using them to make painful but needed changes. Use your message to capture my imagination so that the words which flow from my mouth are always consistent with your agenda. I'm going to let you stand watch over my mouth.

Amen.

TOUGH TIMES

PSALM 138:7 (ABP)
Lord, even though I'm going through some tough times, you continue to keep me alive.

2 CORINTHIANS 6:4 (NLT)
In everything we do, we show that we are true ministers of God. We patiently endure troubles and hardships and calamities of every kind.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
We patiently endure the tough times because we know that God will carry us through and we'll end up in an even better spot.

PRAYER
God, you patiently persevere through the suffering that we direct your way. Then, in your love you overcome and carry us through our difficulties. Forgive me for losing perspective and whining my way through the hard times. Help me to patiently endure troubles and hardships and calamities of every kind. I'm going to trust that you are carrying me through the chaos and pain.

Amen.

PEACE FROM GOD

PSALM 85:9-10 (ABP)
God’s salvation is at hand for those who live to honor him. With his salvation comes his glory -- living here with us in our land. Imagine what it will be like -- love and loyalty in tight alliance -- peace and justice embracing like old friends.

ROMANS 5:1 (ABP)
Faith has resulted in a restored and right relationship with God, through our Master Jesus Christ. Indeed, we are at peace!

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God is offering his peace for all who will accept it.

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for the peace that is ours through the faithfulness of Christ. Give me the faith to fully embrace him and his peace. Restore the hope I've lost because of the violent words and actions that are so prominent on the world stage. I need to refocus on what you've done and what you will do as relationships are restored through you.

Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
