SACRIFICES ARE US

EXODUS 35:29 (ABP)
All the Israelite men and women who were willing volunteered these gifts to carry out the work that GOD had through Moses commanded them to do.

1 PETER 2:5 (ABP)
Y'all are living stones being used to build a spiritual house -- a temple where you are collectively the designated priests offering Christ-approved God-pleasing sacrifices.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Sacrifices are us.

PRAYER
God, it is a great honor to participate in your work. Forgive us for treating your call as something we do at our convenience. We like the honor that goes with being your designated people but fail to get beyond that. Help us to embrace the sacrificial nature of our priestly calling. Show me what it means to be offering sacrifices to you in my situation today. I'm eager to give. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

RIGHT AND HONORABLE

ISAIAH 5:22-23 (ABP)
Those who accept bribes to spare the guilty, while robbing the innocent of justice are DOOMED!

PHILIPPIANS 4:8 (CEB)

Focus your thoughts on these things: all that is true, all that is holy, all that is just, all that is pure, all that is lovely, and all that is worthy of praise.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Saturate your life with the right and honorable stuff.

PRAYER
Holy God, how easily I exclude myself from the wrongs I see in others. Help me to change direction and follow the way of Christ who chose to suffer rather than inflict suffering. Help me endure scorn and misunderstanding rather than stay silent in the face of injustice. May the purity of Christ embolden me to suffer for him. Amen. (Daily Texts, Ground Up Grace edition)

Amen.

THE FUTURE

ISAIAH 60:18 (NLT)
Violence will disappear from your land;
the desolation and destruction of war will end.
Salvation will surround you like city walls,
and praise will be on the lips of all who enter there.

2 PETER 3:13 (CEV)
God has promised us a new heaven and a new earth, where justice will rule. We are really looking forward to this!

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Our lives now are shaped by our trust in God's promise of a new earth characterized by justice.

PRAYER

Thank you for the promise, God, of a new and improved future. I confess that I get so discouraged by the way things roll now that I lose sight of your promise. Refill my personal tank with hope so that I can live according to the rules of the future instead of the chaos of the present. I pray in the name of our Savior Christ Jesus, who is your agent of transformation in my life and the world.

Amen.

FRUITFUL LIVING

PSALM 143:10 (ABP)
Teach me, my God, how to live in a way that pleases you. Take my hand and graciously walk me to a safe and level field.

GALATIANS 5:22-23 (NLT)
The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
When we allow the Holy Spirit to function in our lives he directs us into fruitfulness.

PRAYER
Gracious God, I long to live in holy communion with you, to live a life that is more than mere existence. Thank you for putting to death in me all that fights against your life-giving Spirit. May I follow your will today so that someone may be blessed and bear good fruit. Amen. (Daily Texts, Ground Up Grace edition)

Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
