FAITHFULNESS

GENESIS 6:8 (MSG)
Noah was different. GOD liked what he saw in Noah.

LUKE 18:8 (MSG)
How much of that kind of persistent faith will the Son of Man find on the earth when he returns?

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Will God recognize faithfulness in us when he examines our lives?

PRAYER
Gracious God, you are faithful even when our faith is deficient. I'm grateful and beg your forgiveness for my failure to trust you. Rebuild my faith so that when Christ returns he'll like what he sees in me. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

NEW THINGS

ISAIAH 62:2 (CEB)
You will be called by a new name,
which the LORD’s own mouth will determine.

2 CORINTHIANS 5:17
So then, if anyone is in Christ, that person is part of the new creation. The old things have gone away, and look, new things have arrived!

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God invites us to become a part of the new thing he is doing.

PRAYER
God of new beginnings, breathe your Spirit into my heart and mind. May I stand strong in your mission to bless and to heal all whom I meet today. Sometimes my life feels worn out. By the grace of Jesus Christ, renew my calling to lift up those who are weary today. Amen. (Daily Texts, Ground Up Grace edition)

Amen.

LET THE SPIRIT

The 4th Sunday in Advent

EXODUS 4:11 (CEB)
Then the LORD said to him, "Who gives people the ability to speak?.. Isn’t it I, the LORD?"

1 CORINTHIANS 2:4 (CEV)
When I talked with you or preached, I didn't try to prove anything by sounding wise. I simply let God's Spirit show his power.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Regardless of how eloquent we might or might not be our focus needs to be on letting the Holy Spirit communicate through us.

PRAYER
God, your message is powerful and life-changing. It is so tempting to try and wrap it in impressive eloquence. Help me to stand down and let you work through me -- whether I'm "on" or "off." Yes, I want to do my best but more so I want to relax and let the Spirit demonstrate his power -- even when I'm at my weakest points.

Amen.

STEADY

PSALM 66:8-9 (NLT)
Let the whole world bless our God
and loudly sing his praises.
Our lives are in his hands,
and he keeps our feet from stumbling.

JUDE 1:24-25 (CEV)
Offer praise to God our Savior because of our Lord Jesus Christ! Only God can keep you from falling and make you pure and joyful in his glorious presence. Before time began and now and forever, God is worthy of glory, honor, power, and authority. Amen.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Only God keeps us steady on our feet.

PRAYER
God, only you are worthy of glory, honor, power, and authority. Our lives are in your hands. You keep us on our feet. Yet, I confess that I allow fear of the future to drag me down. There are so many unknowns. Will circumstances overwhelm me? As I identify the fears I give each of them to you, knowing that you will keep me steady on my feet. You've been at this from before time began and I'm going to trust you to carry on through eternity.

Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
