JEREMIAH 31:20 (CEB)
Isn’t Ephraim my much-loved child?
Don’t I utterly adore him?
Even when I scold him,
I still hold him dear.
I yearn for him and love him deeply,
declares the Lord.
EPHESIANS 2:4-5 (MSG)
Instead, immense in mercy and with an incredible love, he embraced us. He took our sin-dead lives and made us alive in Christ. He did all this on his own, with no help from us!
SUMMARY SENTENCE
We need to understand that all of God's activities are expressions of his great love and mercy for us.
PRAYER
Warmhearted God, it fills me with gratitude knowing that you welcome me into aliveness with Christ. This assures me that I am your child. I am especially grateful that you love me when I am least loveable and even when I don't love myself. Continually teach me with your warmhearted love the way to love you, others, and myself. Amen. (Daily Texts, Ground Up Grace edition)
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

LONGING
The Second Sunday in Christmastide
PSALM 42:2 (ABP)
I long for God -- to be present with the living God. I can't wait until I'm there with him for a face-to-face.
MATTHEW 7:8 (ABP/CEV)
This is no bait-and-switch con game. Everyone who asks will receive. Everyone who searches will find. And the door will be opened for everyone who knocks.
SUMMARY SENTENCE
Those who long for God will be satisfied.
PRAYER
God, we begin this year by acknowledging that all time is in your hands. You will provide everything that we need for 2023. Forgive us for doubting that there are viable solutions to all the issues we face. Help me to turn to you each time I need something -- and to trust that you will provide. Most of all I want this year to be about spending time with you and living each moment to further your agenda for me and the world. Amen.
Amen.

GOD ON GUARD
ZECHARIAH 9:8 (CEV)
God says, "I will stand guard to protect my temple..."
ROMANS 8:31-32 (MSG)
So, what do you think? With God on our side like this, how can we lose? If God didn’t hesitate to put everything on the line for us, embracing our condition and exposing himself to the worst by sending his own Son, is there anything else he wouldn’t gladly and freely do for us?
SUMMARY SENTENCE
God is on duty; trust him.
PRAYER
God, 2022 has been quite a year -- lots of difficulties -- and a lot of good things, too. I thank you for getting me through it. Forgive my anxiety over what is coming in 2023. Help me to trust you for the coming year. I know that you have already made the ultimate sacrifice for us so you'll do whatever needs to be done on my behalf. Amen.

REST
EXODUS 20:9-10 (CEV)
You have six days when you can do your work, but the seventh day of each week belongs to me, your God. No one is to work on that day...
MARK 2:27 (CEV)
Jesus finished by saying, "People were not made for the good of the Sabbath. The Sabbath was made for the good of people."
SUMMARY SENTENCE
God wants people to trust him enough that they'll rest from working.
PRAYER
God, you have given us good lives with lots to do. Sometimes I feel like I need to do more than there is time for. And I push push push to squeeze in more time for accomplishing things. In doing so I inadvertently push you out of my life and routine. Help me to take sabbath seriously so that I can through our communion allow you to recharge me for what really matters. I'm going to rest from pushing myself. Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS
The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.
The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
