FELLOWSHIP OF BELIEVERS

ZECHARIAH 8:21 (CEV)
We're going to ask the LORD All-Powerful to treat us with kindness. Come and join us.

ACTS 16:15 (MSG)
After Lydia was baptized, along with everyone in her household, she said in a surge of hospitality, “If you’re confident that I’m in this with you and believe in the Master truly, come home with me and be my guests.”

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Our calling is to seek the Lord in the company of others.

DAILY FODDER
Practically speaking, how is seeking the Lord in the company of others different from making that pursuit as an individual? Hint: Notice that as soon as Lydia believed, she was immediately drawn into hospitality.

PRAYER
Welcoming God, you've invited us to join the fellowship of those who are turning to you. Forgive me for overemphasizing the individual pursuit of holiness. Help me to figure out how I fit in the company of believers, especially when so many of them are so different from me. I'm going to invite others into my home and my life. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER (ABP)
Our Father in Heaven,
we hold your name in the highest regard.
Please come and establish your reign here on earth
so that everything that happens here will align
with what is happening in heaven.
Give us enough food for today.
Forgive us our wrongdoing,
and we’ll forgive those who have wronged us.
Shield us from the trials and temptations that come our way.
Lastly, we pray that you would protect us from all forms of evil.
Amen.

LIGHT!

ISAIAH 60:2-3 (MSG)
The whole earth is wrapped in darkness,
all people sunk in deep darkness,
But God rises on you,
his sunrise glory breaks over you.
Nations will come to your light,
kings to your sunburst brightness.

REVELATION 21:23-24 (MSG)
The City doesn’t need sun or moon for light. God’s Glory is its light, the Lamb its lamp! The nations will walk in its light and earth’s kings bring in their splendor.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God's glory is the light we need.

DAILY FODDER
Have you ever been overwhelmed by light? Sometimes I walk into the bathroom during early morning darkness and through habit flip on a light switch. The sudden brightness is enough to knock me to the floor. But as I adjust I'm glad to have the light. The more we get used to God's light in the world the more drawing it becomes.

PRAYER
Light of the world, thank you for guiding my way. I become frightened when I take dark detours. Direct me always on the lighted pathway of your love. It gives me hope knowing that many people, in many nations, walk in your light. Strengthen each of us to be beacons of your love in the world. Amen. (Daily TextsGround Up Grace edition)

ONLY GOD'S AGENDA

NUMBERS 22:18 (MSG)
Balaam answered Balak’s servants: "Even if Balak gave me his house stuffed with silver and gold, I wouldn’t be able to defy the orders of my God to do anything, whether big or little."

ACTS 5:29 (MSG)
Peter and the apostles replied, "We must obey God rather than humans!"

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Take a stand to do only God's bidding.

DAILY FODDER
In your experience, how often do you have to put your foot down and say, "We must obey God rather than humans!"?

PRAYER
Almighty God, I'm grateful that you reveal enough of your will that we can discern what to do in most situations. I confess that sometimes I get sucked into advancing the agenda of the world—an agenda that is contrary to yours. Give me a spine to take a stand for you and wisdom as to the best way to do that. I'm here to advance YOUR agenda as revealed through Christ Jesus. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER (ABP
Our Father in Heaven,
we hold your name in the highest regard.

JESUS-GENEROUS

PSALM 54:6 (CEV)
I will bring a gift
and offer a sacrifice
to you, LORD.
I will praise your name
because you are good.

MARK 12:42 (ABP)
A poor widow woman brought two measly coins and dropped them into the offering box.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Heartfelt generosity is an essential element of genuine faith.

DAILY FODDER
Would Jesus consider you to be a generous person?

PRAYER
Generous God, you've given us the greatest gift—your Son incarnate—our Risen Savior. On top of that, you continue to fill my life with good gifts. Yet, generosity seems like such an effort for me. Do I have trouble trusting you? Am I worried that your generosity will dry up leaving me in a pickle? Soften my heart and loosen my fingers. I want to become Jesus-generous. After all, because of your generosity, he lives in me. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER (ABP
Our Father in Heaven,
we hold your name in the highest regard.
Please come and establish your reign here on earth
so that everything that happens here will align
with what is happening in heaven.
Give us enough food for today.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
