GOD ON DUTY

PSALM 121:4 (MSG)
Your Guardian God won’t fall asleep.
Not on your life!
Israel’s Guardian will never doze or sleep.

1 CORINTHIANS 1:8 (MSG)
God himself is right alongside to keep you steady and on track until things are all wrapped up by Jesus.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God is always on duty guarding his people.

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for watching over us. I can easily think of many times when I've experienced your protection. And I'm sure that there are countless times of which I've been unaware. Forgive me for stressing out over my circumstances -- for forgetting that you're right here walking me through the warzone. Keep me calm and steady until I reach my final destination. I'm going to step with confidence. Amen.

THE STRUGGLE

JEREMIAH 25:5 (CEV)
Change your ways! If you stop doing evil, I will let you stay forever in this land that I gave your ancestors.

ROMANS 7:22-23 (MSG)
The moment I decide to do good, sin is there to trip me up. I truly delight in God’s commands, but it’s pretty obvious that not all of me joins in that delight.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Following God's directions, regardless of good intentions, is always a struggle.

PRAYER
Gracious God, thank you for stepping in to save us because we can't save ourselves. I know that it will always be a struggle to completely follow you. Forgive me for accepting the reality of sin in my life too easily. Help me to continue the struggle so that in the end Christ will be honored as the victor over my life. Amen.

TRUST AND OBEY

ECCLESIASTES 12:13 (CEV)
Everything you were taught can be put into a few words:
     Respect and obey God!
     This is what life
          is all about.

ACTS 10:34-35 (MSG)
Peter fairly exploded with his good news: “It’s God’s own truth, nothing could be plainer: God plays no favorites! It makes no difference who you are or where you’re from—if you want God and are ready to do as he says, the door is open."

SUMMARY SENTENCE
No matter who you are, relating to God is about doing what he asks.

PRAYER
Great God, you are worthy of all respect, honor, and obedience. I'm grateful that you reach out to us -- even though we are unworthy. Forgive me for reducing your expectations down to what I want to do. I'm so good at reframing life that way. Inspire me to keep you and your directions as the focal point of my life. I'm going to invite others to accept your hospitality. Amen.

SERVANTS

1 CHRONICLES 28:20 (NLT)
King David said to his son Solomon, "Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Don’t be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. He will see to it that all the work related to the Temple of the LORD is finished correctly."

1 CORINTHIANS 4:1 (CEB)
So a person should think about us this way—as servants of Christ and managers of God’s secrets.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Embrace your identity as a servant of Christ and everything that comes with it.

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for including me in your workforce. It's good to have a purpose and to know that you take care of all who work for you. I confess that there are times when I feel anxiety over my ability to serve well. Help me to trust in your grace. And save me from all distractions. I'm going to live as a servant of Christ Jesus. Amen.

DAILYTEXTS.ORG

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2011 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
