HONORING GOD

MALACHI 1:6 (MSG)
“Isn’t it true that a son honors his father and a worker his master? So if I’m your Father, where’s the honor? If I’m your Master, where’s the respect?” God-of-the-Angel-Armies is calling you on the carpet.

MATTHEW 21:28-29 (CEV)
Jesus said:
I will tell you a story about a man who had two sons. Then you can tell me what you think. The father went to the older son and said, “Go work in the vineyard today!” His son told him that he would not do it, but later he changed his mind and went.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Honor God with your actions.

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for adopting me into your family. I admit that I'm not the best of your children. I'm a little cocky and arrogant -- too busy to make your priorities mine. Adjust my attitude so that I'm fully in line with your gracious agenda. I'm going to live to honor you. Amen.

RESCUE MISSION

JEREMIAH 23:3 (MSG)
I’ll take over and gather what’s left of my sheep, gather them in from all the lands where I’ve driven them. I’ll bring them back where they belong, and they’ll recover and flourish.

LUKE 15:4 (CEV)
If any of you has a hundred sheep, and one of them gets lost, what will you do? Won’t you leave the ninety-nine in the field and go look for the lost sheep until you find it?

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God wants lost people found and returned to the safety of his care.

PRAYER
Good Shepherd God, thank you for finding me when I was so lost. I'm not nearly so passionate about seeking out others who are lost. As I begin to feel secure in your presence show me what it means to be sent out to look for the lost. I'm going to join your rescue mission. Amen.

EVERYONE

ISAIAH 56:8 (NLT)
For the Sovereign Lord,
who brings back the outcasts of Israel, says:
I will bring others, too,
besides my people Israel.”

1 TIMOTHY 2:3-4 (CEV)
God wants everyone to be saved and to know the whole truth...

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God desires his wholeness and healing for everyone.

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for saving us through the gift of your Son Jesus. I confess that I'm not eager to live out that salvation because it's not just about me. You want to include the rest of the world and that feels a bit inconvenient. The world is so resistant to change, yet, you're determined to change how we live and relate to you and each other. Show me what to do -- how to share your salvation and truth with everyone within my sphere of influence. I'm going to expand my vision. Amen.

STAY THE COURSE

The First Sunday after Epiphany

PSAM 119:37 (MSG)
Divert my eyes from toys and trinkets,
invigorate me on the pilgrim way.

COLOSSIANS 2:6-7 (ABP)
So, then, just as you welcomed Jesus the Lord as your messianic king, continue walking with him. Sink deep roots into his life. Allow your life to develop in the way that a solid structure is built -- brick upon brick -- bonded together with faith.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Stay on track with Jesus and you'll become a solid person.

PRAYER
Lord Jesus, I'm so glad that you've come into my life. I want to grow in my walk with you but I'm easily distracted by the shiny trinkets that litter the pathway. Help me to stay focused. I want to become one of your mature, convinced, and convincing followers. Amen.

DAILYTEXTS.ORG

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2011 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
