THE LORD IS WITH YOU

The Second Sunday in Lent

ISAIAH 43:5 (CEV)
Don’t be afraid! I am with you.
From both east and west
I will bring you together.

2 CORINTHIANS 4:8-9 (CEB)
We are experiencing all kinds of trouble, but we aren’t crushed. We are confused, but we aren’t depressed. We are harassed, but we aren’t abandoned. We are knocked down, but we aren’t knocked out.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
The Lord is with you.

PRAYER
Lord, even when my world is falling apart you're there for me. But I confess that I let anxiety take over -- even when it is not warranted. I have a very active imagination. Rescue me from my depression. Even though I'm having trouble seeing it, I'm going to trust that you'll get me through it. Amen.

FLYING

DEUTERONOMY 32:11 (CEV)
The LORD was like an eagle
teaching its young to fly,
always ready to swoop down
and catch them on its back.

PHILIPPIANS 4:7 (CEV)
Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel.

SUMMARY SENTENCE

The Lord carries his own.

PRAYER
You're looking out for us. Thank you, God! I confess that I'm afraid to fly. I've had so many bumps and bruises. Help me to trust you for this moment and then the next and then the next and... I'm going to learn to fly because I know that you are there for me. Amen.

REVEALING GOD

AMOS 4:13 (MSG)
Look who’s here: Mountain-Shaper! Wind-Maker!
He laid out the whole plot before Adam.
He brings everything out of nothing,
like dawn out of darkness.
He strides across the alpine ridges.
His name is GOD, God-of-the-Angel-Armies.

JOHN 17:6-7 (CEV)
Jesus prayed, "You have given me some followers from this world, and I have shown them what you are like. They were yours, but you gave them to me, and they have obeyed you. They know that you gave me everything I have."

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Jesus reveals God and all that comes from God.

PRAYER
Thank you, Lord, for being in the midst of mighty mountains, terrifying clouds, and dazzling lights. Inexplicable marvels fill your creation. Captivate us with the immensity of what you have made. Help us to appreciate the complexity that coexists in our own lives. Grant peace, presence, and perspective in Jesus' name. Amen. (Daily Texts, Ground Up Grace edition)

UNFAZED

2 SAMUEL 22:3 (CEV)
My God is my rock—I take refuge in him!—
he’s my shield and my salvation’s strength,
my place of safety and my shelter.
My savior! Save me from violence!

ROMANS 8:38-39 (MSG)
None of this fazes us because Jesus loves us. I’m absolutely convinced that nothing—nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
We're unfazed by our circumstances because we know that God is our loving protector.

PRAYER
God, there is so much in the world that is trying to drag me down. Yet, you are my protector. Thank you for your unfailing love. Forgive me for allowing my circumstances to overwhelm me -- for allowing myself to wallow in self-pity, anxious about what's ahead. Save me from me, because I'm often my own worst enemy. I'm going to step forward confident of your love and protection. Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2011 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
