PEACE

Good Friday

PSALM 147:14 (NLT)
He sends peace across your nation
and satisfies your hunger with the finest wheat.

EPHESIANS 2:14 (NLT)
For Christ himself has brought peace to us. He united Jews and Gentiles into one people when, in his own body on the cross, he broke down the wall of hostility that separated us.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Through the self-sacrifice of Christ Jesus God has established a new peaceful order where hostility no longer has the final word.

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, as we pause to recall the sacrifice that Christ Jesus made on our behalf, we thank you for sending him to us to establish a new peaceful order. I admit, though, that I don't always tap into that order in the way that I relate to the world and people. I get sucked into tit-for-tat conflicts and jockeying to dominate my opponents -- even when my cause is good. Have mercy on me and continue to develop your peaceful disposition in my life. I'm going to follow the Prince of Peace -- even if it means following him up onto a cross. Amen.

ANSWERS

Maundy Thursday

JOB 33:13-14 (CEV)
So why do you challenge God to answer you? God speaks in different ways, and we don’t always recognize his voice.

JOHN 18:20-21 (CEV)
But Jesus told him, “I have spoken freely in front of everyone. And I have always taught in our meeting places and in the temple, where all of our people come together. I have not said anything in secret. Why are you questioning me? Why don’t you ask the people who heard me? They know what I have said.”

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Don't expect answers if the only thing you want to do is argue with God.

PRAYER
All-knowing God, thank you for revealing the truth which is embodied in Jesus. I'm sorry for my demanding attitude and the ways that I angle for the answers that I want to hear. Help me to accept that my capacity is limited and that my wisdom to handle the full picture is non-existent. As I struggle fill me with your guiding Holy Spirit. I'm going to trust that you know what you're doing. Amen.

GOD IS SUFFICENT

PROVERBS 23:17 (MSG)
Don’t for a minute envy careless rebels;
soak yourself in the Fear-of-God—
That’s where your future lies.

LUKE 23:34 (MSG)
Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them; they don’t know what they’re doing.”

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Keep looking to God, even when you're under fire.

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank you for warning me about the dangers of trusting my fears and doubts. Intercede for me, Lord. I become so easily influenced to want things that are contrary to your will. Let the envious distractions in my world grow dim. Help me to keep focused on your sufficiency throughout my day. Amen. (Daily Texts, Ground Up Grace edition)

A SON GIVEN

ISAIAH 9:6 (CEV)
A child has been born for us.
We have been given a son
who will be our ruler.

2 PETER1:17 (CEV)
God, our great and wonderful Father, truly honored him by saying, “This is my own dear Son, and I am pleased with him.”

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God has given his Son to put things right.

PRAYER
Merciful God, as we approach our celebration of Good Friday and Easter we pause to thank you for sending your Son to us as the great sacrifice who makes things right. I acknowledge that I'm prone to focus on lesser matters. Use this holy week to redirect my attention to the gift that comes through your Son. I'm going to join you in honoring him. Amen.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2011 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
