GOD'S CARE

The Second Sunday of Advent

EZEKIEL 34:12 (CEB)
As a shepherd seeks out the flock when some in the flock have been scattered, so will I seek out my flock.

JOHN 10:11 (MSG)
I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd puts the sheep before himself, sacrifices himself if necessary.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
God cares for us with the same intensity as an outstanding shepherd who cares for his sheep.

PRAYER
Gracious God, you look after us, even when we're scattered and confused by what's happening. Forgive us for thinking we should be able to solve our problems and create perfect solutions for our situation. Gently direct us so that we grow to see the value of Christ's sacrifice and how it leads us to greener pastures. I'm going to live well because of your care. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

TRULY FREE

PSALM 102:19-20 (CEB)
The LORD looked down from his holy summit,
     surveyed the earth from heaven,
     to hear the prisoners’ groans,
to set free those condemned to death...

JOHN 8:36 (NLT)
So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Jesus is the source of God's freedom.

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for the freedom that comes to us through Christ Jesus. Forgive us for misinterpreting and misapplying that freedom so that it becomes all about us and our agendas. Save us from our dysfunctional and deadly desires. Free us to follow wherever Christ leads. I'm going to live in true freedom.

Amen.

THE SPIRIT

NUMBERS 11:29 (NLT)
But Moses replied, “...I wish that all the LORD’s people were prophets and that the LORD would put his Spirit upon them all!”

1 THESSALONIANS 5:19-21 (CEB)
Don’t suppress the Spirit. Don’t brush off Spirit-inspired messages, but examine everything carefully and hang on to what is good.

SUMMARY SENTENCE

Hang on to everything the Spirit of God says so that you can do the good and right thing.

PRAYER

Holy Spirit, you put us in touch with everything that is good. You fill us with wisdom and lead us along the pathways that are healthy, happy, and free. Still, we tend to experience any input from beyond ourselves as restrictive. Fill us again so that it wells up from within us. I'm going to use your guidance to figure out what is truly good and to empower me to do right.

Amen.

THANKFUL

GENESIS 35:3 (NLT)
Jacob said, "We are now going to Bethel, where I will build an altar to the God who answered my prayers when I was in distress. He has been with me wherever I have gone."

EPHESIANS 5:20 (ABP)
Keep on making music for God the Father, music which expresses gratitude for everything, music which resonates with Christ Jesus.

SUMMARY SENTENCE
Keep on thanking God for what he has done and is doing for you.

PRAYER
Thank you, God, for all that you've done for me. I am especially grateful that you came into the world through Christ Jesus to secure forgiveness and new life through his death and resurrection. You are the best! Forgive me for allowing the cares of life to drown out my gratitude for all you're doing. Help me to write a new song of thanksgiving today, literally or figuratively speaking. I'm going to continue to sing out my gratitude.

Amen.

DAILYTEXTS.ORG

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2011 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
