Forgiveness

The Eleventh Day of Christmas

I will punish you based on what you have done, declares the Lord. ~ Jeremiah 21:14 (CEB)

Forgive our sins, just as we have forgiven those who did wrong to us. ~ Matthew 6:12 (ERV)

God, sometimes you scare me. The idea of consequence and punishment for the things we've done is very troubling. It's not at all what I'm hoping to hear. I'm eager to hear about forgiveness and restoration. Of course, forgiveness and restoration aren't possible until we acknowledge the reality of our sinfulness. Is that what you're trying to get me to do? To take my sin seriously enough that I seek your forgiveness? Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner. Amen.

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.
