The name

People of Israel, I will deal with you for the honor of my name. I will not deal with you based on your evil conduct and sinful practices. ~ Ezekiel 20:44a (NIRV)

...your sins have been forgiven through Jesus’ name. ~ 1 John 2:12 (CEB)

Gracious God, I am sure glad that my position and my future does not depend on the reputation that I have developed with my name. I am a broken person and my name is tarnished. Again, I repent of my sin. And again, I state for the record that I am depending solely on the most honorable name of Jesus. Your Son died on the cross to kill off our sin. Then he rose from the dead to lead us into new lives that are no longer sin-driven. I'm not there, yet. But you are definitely at work in my life and I am grateful. Amen.

Challenging Words
  • reputation -- what people think of you, their impression of your character or capabilities
  • tarnished -- stained or dirty, imperfect
  • repent -- to turn and go a different direction

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
