Blessings

If you obey the Lord your God, here are the blessings that will come to you and remain with you. You will be blessed in the cities. You will be blessed out in the country. ~ Deuteronomy 28:2–3 (NIRV)

(Jesus said to his disciples:) But blessed are your eyes because they see. And blessed are your ears because they hear. ~ Matthew 13:16 (NIRV)

Lord, you are the mysterious God who is full of blessings, which you freely give away. We are blessed to have Jesus and to have heard his message. You do all of this for us -- and a lot more -- even though we are not very obedient. You bless people who don't deserve blessings. When it comes to your blessings, you have under-promised. And your generosity motivates me toward greater obedience. Amen.

Challenging Words
  • blessings -- something given to you that helps you, makes you happy or satisfied. Blessings are the signs of God's approval or love.
  • under-promised -- If someone gives you more than they have said they will give, they have under-promised. For example, if your friends says "If you drive me to the mall, I will give you $5 so you can buy gasoline." But then when you take him to the mall, he gives you $10. He promised $5 but gave you $10. That's $5 more than he promised.

*ABOUT THE
DAILY TEXTS

The Daily Texts have been published by the Moravian Church since 1731. In 2015 I started posting these Bible verses for my spiritual formation students at Pacific Islands University. In the process of responding to the verses, I found the rhythm of looking for a common thread and writing a prayer based on that key idea to be helpful for my own soul.

The prayers are more or less modeled on the TRIP method, which is what I ask my students to do in their journaling. ~ Brad Boydston
